Logic Circuits need Decoupling Capacitors - but what is Coupling?

04:28
We all know that logic circuits need decoupling capacitors, but what do they prevent? What exactly is coupling. Here I have two 7555 oscillator circuits and their behaviour is completely different when the decoupling capacitors are removed.

Charging a Car Battery with a Solar Panel and Charge Controller

02:35
If you connect a solar panel directly to a car battery, it will eventually overcharge the battery and damage it. That's why you need to use a solar charge controller. This is my own design using the latest microcontroller and MOSFET circuitry. It consumes less than 1mA (that's very little) and has a neat little blue LED that tells you the battery voltage. It can also be connected in various different configurations so you can do clever things like charge two batteries from one solar panel. You can get the PWM5 from www.256.co.uk

High Power LED Tutorial #1 - How to Drive 1W and 3W LEDs from 12 Volts

07:56
High power LEDs differ from regular LEDs in a number of respects. Firstly, current regulation using resistors is impractical so it's necessary to use a switched mode voltage and current regulator. Secondly, they generate heat which must be drawn away from the LED to prevent damage by overheating.

New series revealing secrets of the PWM5 solar charge controller. Soon to become an open source project, I can now reveal all of the confidential information held back while the PWM5 was a commercial product. Starting with a competing product which inspired much of the PWM5's specification and feature list, I will go on to reveal information on sales, reliability, performance and what I might have done differently in hindsight. Review: 400W Digitally Controlled DC/DC Step-Up Boost Converter

This digitally controlled boost converter makes driving high power LEDs from a 12 volt source really easy. But it has a really slow voltage rise time, so the LED takes 10 seconds or so to brighten up. NOTE: Also see Jim Conner's tests which highlight some potentially problematic bugs in this unit: http://youtu.be/Xp6uDBMn3cY Specification: Input: 6v to 40v - 15A max (fuse protected) Output: 8v to 80v - 10A max (400W max power)

Charge a Battery with Solar Power and feed Electricity into the Grid

03:52
Once your battery is fully charged, very little current is needed to keep it topped up. Most of the available power from your solar panels is wasted as the charge controller is mostly switched off. Enter the 12 volt grid tie inverter which can export all that solar power to your mains electricity grid, saving you money. But how do you keep your battery topped up and send surplus power to the grid at the same time? The PWM5 Solar Charge Controler from www.256.co.uk is the only charge controller with 12 volt grid tie inverter compatibility built-in. Make your solar panels really work for you.

5A PPTC PolyFuse Repairs itself Automatically after it Blows

04:36
This is a homebrew self-repairing 5A fuse which uses a PPTC or PolyFuse. I've also added an indicator lamp which shows when the fuse has blown. The fuse doesn't actually blow; it just flips from a low resistance to a high resistance when its temperature reaches a certain point.By removing the high current path, the fuse cools down and its low resistance is restored.

Fake LM2596HV Voltage Regulator Buck Converter Modules bought on eBay

10:53
There's a really useful variant of the LM2596 voltage regulator called the LM2596HV which can handle 60 volts on its input. But be careful - some that I bought recently turned out to be fake. At about 50v, the regulator became unstable and died which could very easily destroy whatever you have connected to the output.
