Romanian girls trafficked into Europe's sex industry for generations

10:01
In the summer of 2015 the Thomson Reuters Foundation met 17-year-old Maya, in a small town in rural Romania. A bright and articulate teenager, Maya shared her experiences of being trafficked into sex work in the city by her boyfriend. Her story is not uncommon, due to widespread poverty in rural Romania many young people see the sex industry as the best way to make a living. Through the Nightingales project, an NGO in Romania that helps young people at risk of being trafficked, we met many girls determined to have a different future. Through interviews with Maya’s sisters and those closest to her, this film highlights the difficult choices that fuel the trafficking of young women in Romania. At the Thomson Reuters Foundation we act to promote socio-economic progress and the rule of law worldwide. We play a leading role in the fight against human trafficking. We use the skills, values, and expertise of Thomson Reuters to run programmes that trigger real change and empower people around the world. We tackle global issues. We achieve lasting impact. Wonderland of Human Trafficking

03:43
READ --- I'm in a deeply emotional state right now. This quite a long advert about human trafficking has moved me so much. This piece of art, if you could call it that, is nearly four minutes in length. It has no speech in it. Instead of talking it's set to the tune of 'Satumaa', an old Finnish tango about an utopia. 'Satumaa' means Wonderland and it's also the name of this advert. It just suits this advert so well. The girl misses her younger sister (is she her sister, I think she is.) when the tango tells us about longing for someone. Vocals by Paula Vesala. I love her voice. Also, you don't need to understand the vocals in order to understand the ad, but I still tried to translate the lyrics (put CC on) but this tango is so touching with its original lyrics that my translation is not nearly as good as the original.

Child Sex Trafficking on the Internet- "Selling the Girl Next Door" Documentary

42:43
CNN's Amber Lyon Investigates Internet Child Sex Trafficking in America Selling the Girl Next Door takes viewers into the world of underage American girls caught up in the violent sex trade. Thousands of girls under the age of 18 are ensnared into lives of prostitution annually, according to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Many are runaways or "throwaways" trapped in "the oldest profession" by pimps who sell them using modern sales and marketing techniques, including the online classified website Backpage.com. In a statement dated December 28, 2011 Backpage.com said it is "committed to preventing those who are intent on misusing the site for illegal purposes." Click on the following link to read an up-to-date list of the safety measures backpage.com says it is taking http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2011/images/01/24/backpage.safety.security.backgrounder.2420110124.pdf In a year-long investigation, CNN correspondent Amber Lyon reveals the devastating realities of the business of underage sex -- speaking to a young teen runaway sold online from a Las Vegas hotel, the men that obsessively seek Internet sex connections, and women long into careers as sex workers who were trafficked as teens or children. Along the way, Lyon interviews well-known brothel owner Dennis Hof. Hof's sex workers describe their own dark pasts and the frightening underworld of underage sex trafficking. Lyon also goes undercover herself, posting an online ad, and taking calls from solicitors -- and Internet pimps -- to understand more about how girls are victimized by traffickers. An interactive map on CNN.com shares Lyon's coast-to-coast journey -- from Maryland, Missouri, Tennessee and Nevada -- trailing runaways, finding their families, meeting sex workers, and visiting a "Johns' school" where convicted solicitors are forced to face the social and criminal consequences of their actions. Video previews are available at CNN.com/backpage.

Inside a Safe House for Costa Rica's Abused and Trafficked Girls

04:05
Costa Rica’s lax prostitution laws has made it a hot bed for sex tourism which has in turn created a human trafficking epidemic. The victims of human trafficking are usually young girls who are either forced or coerced into prostitution. Maria Ferjervary runs a safe house in Costa Rica for the victims of this abuse. The safe house is called Salvando Corazones, which translates to saving hearts. Girls as young as 11 come to Salvando Corazones to escape their abusers and rebuild their lives. Maria Ferjervary’s main goals are to protect these exploited young girls and to help them get a high school education. Salvando Corazones is run purely off of donations and is currently not receiving any federal funding. Ida’s Story - Human Trafficking

03:48
Current statistics suggest almost 21 million people are victims of forced labour globally, trapped in work which they were coerced or deceived into and which they cannot leave. Human trafficking is considered as forced labour and is one of the fastest-growing criminal activities. Trafficked individuals are modern day slaves. Traffickers trap them - often with the promise of paid work or education in another country, or even in a different part of the same country, then sell or force them to work for no pay, often under degrading conditions. Girls and women are more likely to be trafficked to the UK than boys and men. It can be difficult for trafficked people to escape, few manage to run away or are found by the police. Across the UK this remains an unseen issue that we are committed to tackling and have joined forces with Century Films this Red Nose Day to create a short video to raise its profile. Currently, Comic Relief is funding 10 projects that tackle trafficking in the UK. Just £20 could pay for an hour's one-to-one support for a trafficking survivor struggling to cope with post-traumatic stress disorder. If you would like to help us tackle issues such as trafficking, there are lots of ways to get involved and make a difference. “When I first started studying sex trafficking in 2008, I thought it mean girls were kidnapped and chained to beds,” explains Professor Meghan Sobel. Meghan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at Regis University, where she teaches classes on international communication, public relations, and human rights. Meghan's research focuses on the role of mass media in combating human rights abuses and humanitarian crises. She is also a certified cake decorator. Teens are an easy target for Human Traffickers

04:59
When you hear someone mention “Human Trafficking” do you think of women working at seedy nightclubs and/or illegal immigrants? Do you think of students? Human Traffickers are targeting our children across our great city and our teens are very impressionable who can easily fall victim. The Crime Stoppers of Houston Safe School Program brings awareness to schools by talking to students about what Human Trafficking is, what it may look like and what they can do to keep themselves and others safe. Our Safe School video shows students acting out a Human Trafficking scenario with two possible outcomes - one of which is the result of ignoring the signs and the other shows what a teen can do to help. Note to school staff: This video is a tool to facilitate the discussion on Human Trafficking and should only be shown by a professional that has been trained to speak to students on the topic of Human Trafficking. Contact Crime Stoppers to set a presentation at your school. Note to parents: This video is a tool to facilitate the discussion on Human Trafficking and we encourage to watch it together. Note to students: Keep telling until someone helps you!

Human Trafficking Survivor Story: Dellena, California

13:55
Add your name to support the CASE Act against human trafficking and online predators: http://www.caseact.org/ In California, many vulnerable women and young girls are held against their will and forced to sell their bodies. The victims are often girls as young as 12 who are sexually exploited for the financial gain of human traffickers. They are afraid for their lives and abused -- sexually, physically, and mentally. Human trafficking is said to be one of the fastest growing criminal enterprises in the world -- and it is taking place right here in our own backyard. Three cities in California -- San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego -- are recognized by the FBI as high intensity child sex trafficking areas. In addition, a recent national study by a victims' rights group gave California an "F" grade for its weak laws dealing with child sex trafficking. The CASE Act, a partnership of California Against Slavery and the Safer California Foundation, will protect children in California by: Increasing prison terms for human traffickers. Requiring convicted sex traffickers to register as sex offenders. Requiring all registered sex offenders to disclose their internet accounts. Requiring criminal fines from convicted human traffickers to pay for services to help victims. The CASE Act has also been endorsed by organizations representing over 90,000 rank and file California Peace Officers, advocates for the protection of children, including Marc Klaas and the KlaasKids Foundation, and victims who survived sexual exploitation when they were children.

ONLY ON AP Italy failing to help migrants trafficked as sex slaves

07:36
(7 Mar 2018) Precious survived a trip across North Africa and two sinking boats before making it to Italy, only to be confronted with the reality facing young Nigerian migrants like her: A "madam" gave her condoms, pantyhose and a G-string, and put her to work. "I had a mattress. It was in the bush," Precious told The Associated Press recently, her face hidden to hide her identity. "If a white man came who said he wasn't going to have sex inside his car, I would take him to my bed." Nigerian teenagers and young women selling sex is a common sight for motorists in Italy. Working along roadsides and secondary highways in cities big and small, they are a haunting reminder that while Italy has been successful in curbing immigration from Libya, it has largely failed to help a fraction of the migrants trafficked as sex slaves. Between 10,000 and 30,000 Nigerian prostitutes are estimated to be walking Italian streets, often to pay off the debts they incurred to get there. Government figures show 1,172 trafficked people were rescued and given special protection in 2016, about 700 of them Nigerian women and girls. More than 100 were minors, like Precious. She was 17 years old when she was found off Libya's coast with a boatload of other migrants and brought to Italy. After Nigerian traffickers put Precious on a train to Turin, the Nigerian "madam" who met her in the northern city sat the girl down and explained her new life: "You don't have any choice. This is what is going on, this is how it is going to be," Precious, a nickname she uses, recalled. "You need to prostitute." The reason? She had to pay off the 20,000-euro debt her traffickers said she had acquired, one customer at a time. The Italian government has tripled its funding to help trafficked girls get off the streets, from 8 million euros in 2015 to 22.5 million in 2017. The government's equal opportunities office says most of the money has gone to providing more beds in safe houses for trafficked women and girls who want to escape life on the streets. But advocates say there is no coordinated response or strategy, and not enough beds to go around. The rescued women can't be housed in regular migrant shelters because their pimps will come for them. In fact, many girls still on the streets actually live in migrant shelters, where their traffickers can operate with impunity, said David Mancini, assistant prosecutor in l'Aquila. Mancini said the traffickers work inside the centres, recruiting and running their business. The girls leave in the morning and come back at night, he said, stressing "it's a pressing issue and we don't have any way to prevent this exploitation." Increasingly, the Nigerian migrants being forced into prostitution are minors, some as young as 13, according to the International Organisation for Migration's 2017 report on human trafficking. "Their young age doesn't allow them to understand the true risk that they are facing," said Oliviero Forti, migrant policy director for the Caritas Catholic charity, which is among dozens of groups providing a patchwork of help for trafficked women and girls. Recent arrivals to Italy are coerced into prostitution "under threats, violence, abuses perpetrated by the traffickers, a form of true slavery," Forti said. Some threats take the form of a ritual voodoo ceremony called "juju", performed in Nigeria before women depart north: they are told they are under a spell and will be cursed, if they don't pay off their debts. Queensy, 22, recalled being taken to a shaman before she left Nigeria. He gave her a piece of a rooster's heart to eat and took samples of her pubic hair and nails. What no one told her was that she would need to sell sex to satisfy that debt. 25 Painfully Disturbing Facts About Human Trafficking

04:00
Did you know that there are more slaves today than ever before in history? These are 25 painfully disturbing facts about human trafficking. https://twitter.com/list25 https://www.facebook.com/list25 http://list25.com Check out the text version too! - http://list25.com/25-painfully-disturbing-facts-about-human-trafficking/ Here's a preview: The average cost of a slave in 2013 was between $90 and $100 In most regions, 80% of trafficking involves sexual exploitation The remaining 20% is generally for labor exploitation The number of slaves on Earth today is estimated between 20 and 30 million Nearly 1 million of them are moved across an international border every year on the black market 70% of those slaves are female 50% are children Behind drugs and weapons, human trafficking is the third largest international crime industry in the world It generates approximately $33 billion ever year Over half of that comes from industrialized countries Even for purposes of labor exploitation, women still constitute over half of Earth's enslaved population Organ harvesting is another seldom mentioned but quickly growing industry that benefits from human trafficking An estimated 30,000 victims of sex trafficking die each year from abuse, disease, torture, and neglect Eighty percent of those sold into sexual slavery are under 24, and some are as young as six years old Ludwig "Tarzan" Fainberg, a convicted trafficker, said, "You can buy a woman for $10,000 and make your money back in a week if she is pretty and young. Then everything else is profit A 2003 study in the Netherlands found that, on average, a single sex slave earned her pimp at least $250,000 a year A human trafficker can earn 20 times what he or she paid for a girl. Provided the girl was not physically brutalized to the point of ruining her beauty, the pimp could sell her again for a greater price because he had trained her and broken her spirit, which saves future buyers the hassle The end of the Cold War has resulted in the growth of regional conflicts and the decline of borders. Many rebel groups turn to human trafficking to fund military actions and garner soldiers. According to a 2009 Washington Times article, the Taliban buys children as young as seven years old to act as suicide bombers. The price for child suicide bombers is between $7,000-$14,000 UNICEF estimates that 300,000 children younger than 18 are currently trafficked to serve in armed conflicts worldwide Babies are sold on the black market, where the profit is divided between the traffickers, doctors, lawyers, border officials, and others. Researchers argue that as the economic crisis deepens, the number of people trafficked for forced labor will increase. Human trafficking is one of the fastest growing criminal enterprises because it holds relatively low risk with high profit potential. Criminal organizations are increasingly attracted to human trafficking because, unlike drugs, humans can be sold repeatedly There are more slaves in the world today than ever before in history

Ex-Navy SEALs Rescue Children From Sex Trafficking In San Diego (HBO)

07:03
According to the FBI, there were 465,676 National Crime Information Center entries for missing children in 2016. Frustrated that police don’t always treat runaway and missing children cases as a high priority, private investigator Joseph Travers started Saved in America to pick up these cases where cops leave off. Saved in America is a San Diego–based nonprofit made up of former Navy SEALS and police officers who, as licensed private investigators, assist parents and law enforcement in tracking down runaways. Since its inception in 2015, the group has assisted in the rescue of 35 children, finding them from California to Florida, in an average time of nine days and at a cost of $5,000. VICE News follows the group of volunteers on the ground as they assist a mother from Utah in search of her daughter.
