Ida’s Story - Human Trafficking
Current statistics suggest almost 21 million people are victims of forced labour globally, trapped in work which they were coerced or deceived into and which they cannot leave. Human trafficking is considered as forced labour and is one of the fastest-growing criminal activities. Trafficked individuals are modern day slaves. Traffickers trap them - often with the promise of paid work or education in another country, or even in a different part of the same country, then sell or force them to work for no pay, often under degrading conditions. Girls and women are more likely to be trafficked to the UK than boys and men. It can be difficult for trafficked people to escape, few manage to run away or are found by the police. Across the UK this remains an unseen issue that we are committed to tackling and have joined forces with Century Films this Red Nose Day to create a short video to raise its profile. Currently, Comic Relief is funding 10 projects that tackle trafficking in the UK. Just £20 could pay for an hour's one-to-one support for a trafficking survivor struggling to cope with post-traumatic stress disorder. If you would like to help us tackle issues such as trafficking, there are lots of ways to get involved and make a difference. ONLY ON AP Italy failing to help migrants trafficked as sex slaves
(7 Mar 2018) Precious survived a trip across North Africa and two sinking boats before making it to Italy, only to be confronted with the reality facing young Nigerian migrants like her: A "madam" gave her condoms, pantyhose and a G-string, and put her to work. "I had a mattress. It was in the bush," Precious told The Associated Press recently, her face hidden to hide her identity. "If a white man came who said he wasn't going to have sex inside his car, I would take him to my bed." Nigerian teenagers and young women selling sex is a common sight for motorists in Italy. Working along roadsides and secondary highways in cities big and small, they are a haunting reminder that while Italy has been successful in curbing immigration from Libya, it has largely failed to help a fraction of the migrants trafficked as sex slaves. Between 10,000 and 30,000 Nigerian prostitutes are estimated to be walking Italian streets, often to pay off the debts they incurred to get there. Government figures show 1,172 trafficked people were rescued and given special protection in 2016, about 700 of them Nigerian women and girls. More than 100 were minors, like Precious. She was 17 years old when she was found off Libya's coast with a boatload of other migrants and brought to Italy. After Nigerian traffickers put Precious on a train to Turin, the Nigerian "madam" who met her in the northern city sat the girl down and explained her new life: "You don't have any choice. This is what is going on, this is how it is going to be," Precious, a nickname she uses, recalled. "You need to prostitute." The reason? She had to pay off the 20,000-euro debt her traffickers said she had acquired, one customer at a time. The Italian government has tripled its funding to help trafficked girls get off the streets, from 8 million euros in 2015 to 22.5 million in 2017. The government's equal opportunities office says most of the money has gone to providing more beds in safe houses for trafficked women and girls who want to escape life on the streets. But advocates say there is no coordinated response or strategy, and not enough beds to go around. The rescued women can't be housed in regular migrant shelters because their pimps will come for them. In fact, many girls still on the streets actually live in migrant shelters, where their traffickers can operate with impunity, said David Mancini, assistant prosecutor in l'Aquila. Mancini said the traffickers work inside the centres, recruiting and running their business. The girls leave in the morning and come back at night, he said, stressing "it's a pressing issue and we don't have any way to prevent this exploitation." Increasingly, the Nigerian migrants being forced into prostitution are minors, some as young as 13, according to the International Organisation for Migration's 2017 report on human trafficking. "Their young age doesn't allow them to understand the true risk that they are facing," said Oliviero Forti, migrant policy director for the Caritas Catholic charity, which is among dozens of groups providing a patchwork of help for trafficked women and girls. Recent arrivals to Italy are coerced into prostitution "under threats, violence, abuses perpetrated by the traffickers, a form of true slavery," Forti said. Some threats take the form of a ritual voodoo ceremony called "juju", performed in Nigeria before women depart north: they are told they are under a spell and will be cursed, if they don't pay off their debts. Queensy, 22, recalled being taken to a shaman before she left Nigeria. He gave her a piece of a rooster's heart to eat and took samples of her pubic hair and nails. What no one told her was that she would need to sell sex to satisfy that debt. Young Vietnamese girls being trafficked to China as brides
The villages along the Vietnamese-Chinese border are a hunting ground for human traffickers. Girls as young as 13 say they are tricked or drugged, then spirited across the porous border by boat, motorbike or car. Young Vietnamese women are valuable commodities in China, where the one-child policy and long-standing preference for sons has heavily skewed the gender ratio. To put it simply, Chinese men are hungry for brides. Người Việt TV (c) 2016 - http://NGUOIVIETTV.com Người Việt Online - http://NGUOI-VIET.com

'Famous' DJ arrested after 39 women and girls suspected of being trafficked for sex are rescued
A 'famous' DJ has been arrested after 39 women and girls were rescued from a notorious sex trafficking ring. The victims, many of them teenagers, were threatened with black magic, forced into prostitution and kept in squalid cave-like houses, according to Europol.Gang members forced the victims into sex work to pay off a £26,000 'travel' debt and were controlled with voodoo threats. But 89 people - including a well-known Nigerian DJ who has not been yet been named - have now been arrested in what is one of the biggest trafficking busts in Europe, according to Europol. The DJ allegedly helped move victims to Spain and organise sexual exploitation across the country. He was caught flying back into Spain after recording a music video.Spanish police rescued the women and the operation was carried out in collaboration with British and Nigerian law enforcement agencies. The victims, many under the age of 18, were believed to have undergone voodoo "juju" rituals in Nigeria to force them to comply with orders, Britain's National Crime Agency (NCA) said. The investigation began when one of the underage victims reported to police that she had been coerced into trafficking by voodoo threats in Nigeria. The victims were transferred from Nigeria to Europe via Libya and Italy.Once in Spain, the women were kept in squalid conditions in cave houses in Almeria, where they were exploited in prostitution to pay off the EUR 30 000 debt they owed to the criminal organisation. They were then forced into prostitution to pay off "debts" of 30,000 euros ($36,900) each that they were told they owed the organisation for their journey to Europe.Europol said bank accounts used by the network to launder more than 300,000 euros had been blocked."(This) was a highly organised crime gang, exploiting young woman for lengthy periods of time, keeping them in horrendous conditions where they knew there would be no escape," the NCA's deputy director Tom Dowdall said in a statement.Europol said raids were carried out across 11 Spanish cities last November but the operation could not be announced until Thursday to avoid jeopardising investigations. The NCA said police had also arrested a Nigerian woman in Manchester this year who they believe was controlling some of the victims in Spain. She is in custody awaiting extradition to Spain, it said.A Europol statement said the Nigerian crime ring was linked to the Eiye Confraternity - a network that Spanish police have previously compared to the mafioso in Chicago in the 1930s.Europol said Eiye operated in clandestine groups all over the world, funding the organisation in Nigeria through both legal and illicit activities, particularly through human trafficking.

Inside a Safe House for Costa Rica's Abused and Trafficked Girls
Costa Rica’s lax prostitution laws has made it a hot bed for sex tourism which has in turn created a human trafficking epidemic. The victims of human trafficking are usually young girls who are either forced or coerced into prostitution. Maria Ferjervary runs a safe house in Costa Rica for the victims of this abuse. The safe house is called Salvando Corazones, which translates to saving hearts. Girls as young as 11 come to Salvando Corazones to escape their abusers and rebuild their lives. Maria Ferjervary’s main goals are to protect these exploited young girls and to help them get a high school education. Salvando Corazones is run purely off of donations and is currently not receiving any federal funding. Teens are an easy target for Human Traffickers
When you hear someone mention “Human Trafficking” do you think of women working at seedy nightclubs and/or illegal immigrants? Do you think of students? Human Traffickers are targeting our children across our great city and our teens are very impressionable who can easily fall victim. The Crime Stoppers of Houston Safe School Program brings awareness to schools by talking to students about what Human Trafficking is, what it may look like and what they can do to keep themselves and others safe. Our Safe School video shows students acting out a Human Trafficking scenario with two possible outcomes - one of which is the result of ignoring the signs and the other shows what a teen can do to help. Note to school staff: This video is a tool to facilitate the discussion on Human Trafficking and should only be shown by a professional that has been trained to speak to students on the topic of Human Trafficking. Contact Crime Stoppers to set a presentation at your school. Note to parents: This video is a tool to facilitate the discussion on Human Trafficking and we encourage to watch it together. Romanian girls trafficked into Europe's sex industry for generations
In the summer of 2015 the Thomson Reuters Foundation met 17-year-old Maya, in a small town in rural Romania. A bright and articulate teenager, Maya shared her experiences of being trafficked into sex work in the city by her boyfriend. Her story is not uncommon, due to widespread poverty in rural Romania many young people see the sex industry as the best way to make a living. Through the Nightingales project, an NGO in Romania that helps young people at risk of being trafficked, we met many girls determined to have a different future. Through interviews with Maya’s sisters and those closest to her, this film highlights the difficult choices that fuel the trafficking of young women in Romania. At the Thomson Reuters Foundation we act to promote socio-economic progress and the rule of law worldwide. We play a leading role in the fight against human trafficking. We use the skills, values, and expertise of Thomson Reuters to run programmes that trigger real change and empower people around the world. We tackle global issues. We achieve lasting impact. 🇮🇳 India's Slave Brides |101 East | भारत का दास दुल्हन
101 East investigates how every year, tens of thousands of girls and women in India are trafficked into slave marriages. 10 Nov 2016 23:05 GMT International Women's Day, India, Human trafficking, slavery Decades of sex selection favouring male babies have left some Indian states with vastly more men than women, creating a lucrative and growing market for traffickers. In the patriarchal and feudal state of Haryana where there's a shortage of women to marry, it's normal for men to buy young girls trafficked from other states. Known as "paros", a term implying they can be purchased, they are regularly raped, forced into marriages and made to work as bonded labour. Their uneducated families are often tricked into agreeing to send them away, lured by the idea of a happy marriage for their daughters. But tragically, there is no "happily ever after".
