The business of poverty and food companies | DW Documentary

42:35
Food companies in industrial countries are registering almost no economic growth anymore. That’s why manufacturers are focusing on new markets. [Online until: 11.10.2018] Multinationals are making big profits in threshold nations and developing countries - . This film uses São Paulo and Kenya as two examples to demonstrate how big companies are making money at the expense of people’s health. They promise healthy branded quality for everyone, but what they mainly sell are convenience products containing lots of salt, sugar and flavor enhancers, leading to growing obesity and diseases such as diabetes in societies that are already burdened by poverty and malnutrition. For many people in threshold nations and developing countries, convenience foods made in Europe are a status symbol, so multinational corporations In Brazil and Kenya are cashing in on this image by targeting the poor with their advertising campaigns. So-called PPP or "Popularly Positioned Products" - brand-name products in small packages - are sold for just a few cents. Women from the slums are trained to distribute the products in their private social circles. These jobs are highly sought-after and there’s no shortage of women, most of them unskilled, who are very keen to work for international food companies. The companies like to show themselves taking social responsibility in areas where the state does not. Kenya has a population of around forty-five million. Nineteen million are poor. Almost half the population lives on less than two euros a day. Brazil has a population of two hundred million: around forty-two million are poor. In recent years, increasing numbers have climbed to the lowest rung of the middle class. But this group has health problems: rates of obesity and diabetes are rapidly increasing. Critics like Dr. Carlos Monteiro, Professor of Nutrition and Health at the University of São Paulo, say that’s a total contradiction: the companies are distributing unhealthy products en masse to the people while at the same time presenting themselves as benefactors: "Greenwashing" at the expense of the poorest in society. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Monsanto was one of four groups to introduce genes into plants, and was among the first to conduct field trials of genetically modified crops. Monsanto was one of the first companies to apply the biotechnology industry business model to agriculture, using techniques developed by biotech drug companies. Monsanto's roles in agricultural changes, biotechnology products and lobbying of government agencies and roots as a chemical company have surrounded the company in controversies. The company once manufactured controversial products such as the insecticide DDT, PCBs, Agent Orange and recombinant bovine growth hormone. Its seed patenting model was criticized as biopiracy and a threat to biodiversity. In September 2016 Monsanto agreed to accept Bayer's offer to purchase the company for $66 billion, pending regulatory approval. Top 10 Huge Companies That May Soon Disappear

12:04
It’s no surprise so many huge companies are filing for bankruptcy and going under. It may be no surprise, but it’s always sad when trailblazing companies that have been around for decades call it quits. Here's our list of the Top 10 Companies That are very likely to Disappear soon. Subscribe for more! ► http://bit.ly/BeAmazedSubscribe ◄ Stay updated ► http://bit.ly/BeAmazedFacebook https://twitter.com/BeAmazedVideos https://instagram.com/BeAmazedVideos ◄ For copyright queries or general inquiries please get in touch: [email protected] Save the internet!!! https://www.savetheinternet.com Be Amazed at these Top 10 Huge Companies That Will Disappear! Virgin America - Virgin America was acquired by Alaska Airlines in 2017 and there was a big question mark for a while as to what Alaska Airlines would do with the Virgin brand. American Apparel - At just 19 years old, the American Apparel brand has become synonymous with hipster style and American made products. Toys R Us - It’s hard to believe that a company as widely beloved as Toys R Us would be in this video, but here it is. In its heyday, Toys R Us was known as a “category killer,” - a specialty store that squashes competition from both large to small stores. Twitter - Twitter came on the scene in 2006 and has been a success with users who like to post short messages – or tweets - and interact quickly & concisely with other users in real time. Barnes & Noble - The successful book superstore of the 80’s and 90’s may be no more if sales keep falling at the rate they are. Sales have been down in 17 out of the past 19 quarters, and the company is starting to feel the burn. Google - When Google hit the scene, no one had ever seen anything like it. There was nothing else on the internet that gathered and organized information the way Google has done. Time Warner Cable - Internet-based streaming for movies and television has left many cable companies with very few options. One of those companies is Time Warner Cable. Kmart - In the last decade, Kmart has closed one-third of its locations. The once booming chain, which reached peak profitability in 1992, has slowly but surely been in a downward spiral ever since. Sears - And just as with K-Mart, Sears department stores will be closing more locations before the year is out. In the early 1990’s, Sears was blindsided by the success and popularity of Walmart, which became its greatest competitor. Sears consistently released statements denying that Walmart was any real threat to the brand. Youtube - Being able to view and access information freely on the internet seems like a simple expectation. When it comes to the issue of net neutrality, it’s not as simple as you may think.

The case first surfaced when it was found that Shanghai Husi Food Company had supplied expired meat to McDonald's and KFC. Their parent brand apologized to Chinese customers Monday. 10 Famous Founders Who Don’t Usually Show Their Faces

08:23
Some founders of world-famous brand prefer to stay out of the spotlight and keep themselves a secret. We decided to unveil the mystery and show you the 10 founders of super famous brands producing things you sure use every now and then. Howard Schulz, founder of Starbucks, was inspired by the atmosphere of Italian espresso bars and it’s safe to say that he was the one who made the espresso-based beverages popular in the US. Now you can find a Starbucks almost anywhere in the world. Amancio started his business in the ’70s: He made nightgowns and bathrobes with his wife right in their living room. Once, their German partner declined a huge order and the spouses decided to sell clothes on their own. Later, the company was renamed to Inditex and opened new clothing stores: Massimo Dutti, Pull and Bear, Oysho, Zara Home, Uterqüe, Stradivarius, Lefties, and Bershka. In 2000, the famous Pandora charm bracelet was created: buyers were able to create jewelry of their own design by putting the charms they wanted on the bracelet. Since then, the company has been growing and the Enevoldsen family are one of the richest people in Denmark. In 1969, the musicians from The Doors were recording the album Morrison Hotel. At about the same time, they accidentally came across a diner named Hard Rock Cafe, and their album was exactly in this music style. They made a few pictures in this cafe and then put the photos on the back side of the album cover. A year later, 2 Englishmen called them — Isaac Tigrett and Peter Morton and asked them to let them open a cafe in London named Hard Rock Cafe. At the beginning of the 1930s, Ole Kirk opened a company that made ironing boards and ladders, but he soon started making wooden toys. The word “Lego” consists of 2 Danish words: “leg” (play) and “godt” (good). Music: Right Place, Right Time - Silent Partner https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music Preview photo credit: July 11, 2013 - Sun Valley, Idaho, United States: Phil Knight, chairman and co-founder of Nike Inc., arrives for meetings during day two of Allen and Company's 31st Annual Media and Technology Conference. In 1933, Rene founded a company that made shirts for tennis, golf, and sailing. -Lego was founded by Ole Kirk Christiansen in early 1930s, and its name literally translates as “play good”. -Google was created by 2 students from Stanford University — Larry Page and Sergey Brin. 12 Things You Eat That Are a Lie

08:26
In an age of mass consumption and instant gratification, the want to satisfy our every gastric desire often leaves us all oblivious to the truth surrounding the foods we eat. You might, in reality, just find yourself chewing on a mouthful of lies. Here are 12 things you eat that are a lie. Subscribe for more! ► http://bit.ly/BeAmazedSubscribe ◄ Stay updated ► http://bit.ly/BeAmazedFacebook https://twitter.com/BeAmazedVideos https://instagram.com/BeAmazedVideos◄ For copyright queries or general inquiries please get in touch: [email protected] Credits: http://pastebin.com/7yPgUBaM American Cheese - The bright orange cheese slices made popular by Kraft Foods, usually found inside the Cinderella of American cooking: the cheese burger; are a staple in the corpus of the U.S culinary delight known as fast food. Margarine - For decades, margarine was marketed as the healthy alternative to the seemingly life-destroying devil... butter. This, however, couldn’t be further from the truth. Margarine can, in fact, be quite harmful to the health of its consumers. Chicken Tikka Masala - Most would consider this popular dish a firm pillar of Indian cuisine, or so it’s made to seem by the restaurant and takeout menus. In reality, though, this pillar doesn’t stand quite as firmly as we may think as the dish has a rather murky history. Chicken Tikka Masala is actually said to originate from Glasgow, Scotland. That’s right, it’s a British dish, for now anyways, so long as Scotland decide to remain a part of Great Britain. Pringles - Potato chips stacked in a tube. Well, kind of. The former parent company of this popular brand claimed that the snack can’t and shouldn’t be considered as potato chips at all. They argued that the potato content of the chips in question reach only a meagre 42%. Naked smoothies - PepsiCo advertise this brand of smoothie as containing no added sugar, helping the drink keep up its façade as a health product. The reality is, however, that these smoothies are no better for your body than the most sugary of drinks. Crispy Seaweed - Certain types of seaweed are used as culinary ingredients in many coastal regions around the globe, but perhaps it’s most commonly thought of in reference to forms of Asian cuisine. Crispy seaweed, in particular, is largely attributed to Chinese cooking. Red Snapper - An Oceana org investigation, conducted in 2013, discovered that there’s a US nationwide problem with fraudulent seafood. The study shows that the popular Red Snapper fish is the most mislabelled and miss-sold fish food product throughout the united states. Oceana reported that Red Snapper are often substituted by 28 entirely different species of fish, and this happens in 93% of purchases. Meaning that there’s a very high probability of the Red Snapper you’re eating being a complete and utter fake! Rocky Mountain Oysters - A dish unbeknownst to many who aren’t accustomed to the moo-ey reaches of good ole ranch life; commonly found in regions of the U.S.A’s Great Plains, in steak houses, and in delicatessen joints around the world. One may be coaxed by the name into thinking that this dish is made up entirely of oysters gathered from the Rocky Mountain territory. Aquafina - Another PepsiCo drink, another PepsiCo fib. The label on this brand of bottled water reads across it: “pure water”. But, according to PepsiCo, the water contained within the confines of the bottle actually comes from a Public water source. Pumpkin Spice - There’s a delightful variety of spices that, when mixed together, makeup the seasonally popular pumpkin spice flavour. The commercial stuff we find laden over seemingly anything and everything throughout autumn and winter -a time abundant of pumpkin spice flavoured products – is, disappointingly, more than likely to fall short of using any real spices. Nuts - Peanuts, walnuts, pecans, and almonds are referred to as nuts only in the culinary sense. In reality, they aren’t nuts at all. Peanuts are in fact Legumes, they are dry edible seeds contained in multiplicity within pods that start to split when they’re ripe, making them closer to peas and beans than to actual nuts. Bananas - The bananas we find on the supermarket shelves and in our homes are the wonderfully edible results of thousands of years of genetic modification, meaning that they aren’t exactlyas natural as we believe them to be.

Kellogg's urban wear - While shopping for clothes, you may have thought to yourself, “If only I could buy some threads with both street cred AND Kellogg's cereal characters.” Okay, maybe not. Wrigley Baking Powder - When you think about the name Wrigley, you probably imagine the taste of some Juicy Fruit or Doublemint gum—and you might even have one of the Doublemint jingles stuck in your head now. Sorry about that. Evian water bra - You've probably seen Evian's bottled water in stores, but you probably wouldn't expect the company to go into the lingerie business. As it turns out, in 2005 the company sold a bra with pockets specifically designed to hold its brand of water. Cosmopolitan Yogurt - We've all seen Cosmopolitan magazine at checkout stands, and it's considered one of the most popular women's magazines in the world. The word Cosmopolitan conjures up images of fashion, dating advice, and sex tips but unfortunately the magazine's popularity didn't quite carry over into the dairy industry. Colgate Frozen Entrees - The name Colgate probably makes you think of fresh breath and maybe a lecture from your dentist about why you should brush more. Bic underwear - Disposable pens, disposable razors, disposable lighters—Bic is known for its disposable, or at least inexpensive plastic products. Coors water - When you think of Coors, you probably picture beer and bars. But in 1990, bottled water was all the rage, and Coors decided to jump on the bandwagon, producing Rocky Mountain spring water. Everlast and Playdough perfume, Nike deodorant - The name Nike instantly brings to mind the iconic check mark logo and thoughts of running shoes. Surprisingly, Nike has branched out from footwear and athletic wear into the personal care market with a brand of deodorant. Lululemon beer - Lululemon became popular a few years ago for making pricey, chic workout clothes, especially yoga pants. But since nothing says "health and fitness" like a cold can of beer, last year the brand introduced its "Curiosity Lager" craft brew in the Canadian market. Pepsi Phone - In late 2015 you may have heard about the release of the Pepsi P1—and no, that's not a new flavor of soda. The P1 is actually a 5.5 inch smartphone, released in China in 2015.
