http://www.rauserbegins.com Depression is a devastating mental disorder affecting up to 20% of Canadians at some point in their lives. It places the sufferer at risk of a whole range of related health problems, including a weakened immune system, high blood pressure, chronic fatigue, and heart disease. Depression can also be fatal: 15% of sufferers attempt suicide. Depression always requires medical treatment, yet for many depressed people the problem is not simply how to find treatment, but how to know if they are depressed in the first place. Let's talk about it. ***** I have been an educator for twenty years and have suffered from clinical depression for over forty years. 10 Warning Signs Your Heart Isn't Working Properly

09:25
How to Prevent Heart Disease. About 610,000 people die from heart disease each year in the U.S. alone. There are tons of factors that can cause a person to develop heart problems, but most of them come down to poor lifestyle choices. Your body gives you warning signs early on so that you can catch an illness in its early stages or even prevent it altogether and save your life. Here are 10 of the most common red flags that indicate bad heart health. A cough that won't quit 1:38 A persistent cough can be a symptom of all kinds of health issues, and cardiovascular disease is one of them. For instance, a chronic cough that produces a pinkish bloody liquid is very common in people with heart failure. Despite what it sounds like, heart failure doesn't mean that the heart completely stops beating. It just means that a person’s heart isn’t pumping blood as well as it should be. As a result, the body doesn't get enough oxygen since it’s carried to all the tissues by the blood. Nausea and loss of appetite 3:07 A lot of heart disease patients show a lack of appetite, nausea, or both, even if they've had just a couple bites of food. The reason for that is built-up fluid around the liver and intestines that interferes with proper digestion. These symptoms are usually accompanied by abdominal pain, upset stomach, or feeling bloated. In fact, abdominal cramps that come and go in short spurts are extremely common right before a heart attack. Your skin becomes paler or takes on a bluish tint 5:28 Being naturally pale doesn’t necessarily mean you have a heart condition. But sudden paleness can be a result of reduced blood flow due to a heart that’s not pumping blood as effectively as it should be. Shock, which can be caused by any condition that prevents the blood in your body from circulating properly, is the main reason why people who are suffering from a heart attack or heart failure turn pale all of a sudden. Chronic or sudden fatigue 7:02 Fatigue can be one of the main symptoms indicating an impending heart attack. Women are more likely to experience heart-related fatigue than men, with 70% of female heart attack patients reporting that they’d felt extremely tired before their episode. Physical or mental activity isn't the reason for such exhaustion, and it increases by the end of the day if it’s due to a failing heart. It’s really hard for this symptom to go unnoticed. Sometimes it's exhausting just to perform even the simplest tasks, like making the bed or taking a shower. Your skin becomes paler or takes on a bluish tint 5:28 3. Skin rashes or unusual spots 6:20 2. Chronic or sudden fatigue 7:02 1. Increased perspiration 7:45 SUMMARY -If their heart isn’t working properly, a lot of men feel pain in their left arm, while women experience the same pain in either or both arms. -A persistent cough can be a symptom of all kinds of health issues, and cardiovascular disease is one of them. -When your heart isn’t pumping enough blood through the body, fluid from your blood vessels leaks into surrounding tissues. Insight Into Depression - Sadhguru

In this discourse "Insight Into Depression", Sadhguru explains that in most cases of depression a person is simply generating intense thoughts and emotions that are working against them and that in many ways, 70% of all illnesses are self-created. ****************************************** Transcript: http://isha.sadhguru.org/blog/video/insight-into-depression/ Sadhguru: If you are capable of causing depression to yourself... I’m saying this not without any concern for your illness or not due to lack of compassion, because that is the nature of what’s happening to you. If you’re causing depression to yourself, you are able to generate substantial amount of intense emotions and thoughts, but in the wrong direction. If you don’t have very strong emotions, very intense thoughts about something, you cannot get depressed. It is just that you are generating thoughts and emotion which work against you, not for you. So you are strong enough to cause depression to yourself, because for you to cause a mental illness for yourself… unless you are pathologically ill which is just a small number of people, rest are all self-created. Most of them are self-created. A few are pathologically ill, it’s… they cannot help it. It just comes from within because of genetic and other factors. Almost everybody here, if we train them towards a certain kind of thought process and emotion and push them a little bit with the outside situations, almost everybody will go… lose their mental balance, they will become clinically ill. They can be driven to madness, I’m saying, because the line between sanity and insanity is very thin, people keep pushing it. You get angry, you’re pushing the line; it’s a thin line. In fact when you get angry you know you’re pushing the line, that's why the expression, ‘I was mad at somebody.’ You are not mad at somebody, you’re just going mad. You cannot be mad at somebody, you’re just pushing your sanity, the boundaries of sanity and moving into insanity, for a certain period of time and coming back. You do one thing, every day you try this – 10 minutes a day try intense anger on somebody. You will see in three months’ time, you will be clinically there. Yes. Just try it, if you want. Because if you keep pushing the line – you go mad and you come back, you go mad and you come back – one day you’re not able to come back, that's all. One day you’re not able to turn back, then you’re clinically ill. You must understand even if you got angry for a moment, you’re already ill; maybe you don’t get the certificate of diagnosis, they don’t slap a certificate on you that you’re gone, but you are going, isn't it? You think it’s your right to throw tantrums, you think it’s your right to get angry with people, you think it’s your privilege to be depressed so that you’ll get attention from somebody. You keep playing this, one day you will not able… you will not be able to turn back. Keep crossing the line every day, one day you will see you cannot cross back, that day you need a doctor. Till then everybody needed a respite from you but the day you can't cross back they get the respite, because now they can catch you and give you to a doctor. Otherwise you’re temporarily going mad, every day many times a day, they cannot even send you to an asylum, they have to bear with you - your family, your friends, your people around you. If you get at least truly clinically ill, we can hand you over. There’s one temple in Tamil Nadu, you know? Where they chain you and keep you? Where there’s no hospital. Depression and Men

03:41
http://howtocopewithdepression.com When it comes to men and depression you will find that there are over three million men in the United States that suffer from depression, however you should know that only 35% of all men find themselves in a depression. When it comes to the view of the male image, you'll find that many call them "the rock" or the "solid one", however men can suffer from depression. Just because you have, a depression doesn't mean that you are any less of a man because of it. Researchers estimate that at least six million men in the United States suffer from a depressive disorder every year. Research and clinical evidence reveal that while both women and men can develop the standard symptoms of depression, they often experience depression differently and may have different ways of coping with the symptoms. Men may be more willing to acknowledge fatigue, irritability, loss of interest in work or hobbies, and sleep disturbances rather than feelings of sadness, worthlessness, and excessive guilt. Some researchers question whether the standard definition of depression and the diagnostic tests based upon it adequately capture the condition as it occurs in men. Men are more likely than women to report alcohol and drug abuse or dependence in their lifetime;however, there is debate among researchers as to whether substance use is a symptom of underlying depression in men or a co occurring condition that more commonly develops in men. Nevertheless, substance use can mask depression, making it harder to recognize depression as a separate illness that needs treatment. Instead of acknowledging their feelings, asking for help, or seeking appropriate treatment, men may turn to alcohol or drugs when they are depressed, or become frustrated, discouraged, angry, irritable, and, sometimes, violently abusive. Some men deal with depression by throwing themselves compulsively into their work, attempting to hide their depression from themselves, family, and friends. Other men may respond to depression by engaging in reckless behavior, taking risks, and putting themselves in harm way. More than four times as many men as women die by suicide in the United States, even though women make more suicide attempts during their lives. In addition to the fact that men attempt suicide using methods that are generally more lethal than those used by women, there may be other factors that protect women against suicide death. In light of research indicating that suicide is often associated with depression, the alarming suicide rate among men may reflect the fact that men are less likely to seek treatment for depression. Many men with depression do not obtain adequate diagnosis and treatment that may be life saving. More research is needed to understand all aspects of depression in men, including how men respond to stress and feelings associated with depression, how to make men more comfortable acknowledging these feelings and getting the help they need, and how to train physicians to better recognize and treat depression in men. Family members, friends, and employee assistance professionals in the workplace also can play important roles in recognizing depressive symptoms in men and helping them get treatment.

Health risks every man should know about - from heart disease to depression - Daily News

Health risks every man should know about - from heart disease to depression - Daily News #Health, #risks, #every, #should, #know, #about, #from, #heart, #disease, #depression  When it comes to the health of the nation’s menfolk, the statistics don’t make for happy reading.  Shockingly, one man in five in the UK dies before 65, while 75% of deaths from heart disease are male, and 67% of men are overweight or obese.  Middle-aged men are also twice as likely to have diabetes as women and have a 37% higher risk of dying from cancer.  The story is the same for mental health, with 76% of suicides being male.  “Men’s health still isn’t as good as it could be, but at least some of the answers are in our hands,” says Martin Todd, chief executive of charity Men’s Health Forum.  “We’re likely to smoke and drink more than women and that definitely contributes to men dying younger.  "And, too often, the pressures of work mean we don’t get our health checked or ask for help early enough.  “When it comes to mental health we need to ask each other if we’re OK, and support friends who need to get help,” says Martin.  But it’s not all doom. He adds: “We can also do more of what we’re good at – men, for instance, are more likely to take up sports.”  Here are the top health risks and how to take control of them... Heart disease  Lifestyle plays a key role in prevention and slowing the progression of heart disease.  “Understand your risk factors, such as high blood pressure, raised cholesterol, being overweight and smoking, which can all increase the likelihood of a heart attack,” says Ashleigh Doggett, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation.  Get your blood pressure and cholesterol tested, stay a healthy weight and don’t ignore chest pains. If you’re aged 40 to 74, you’re entitled to a free health MOT on the NHS (visit nhs.uk for info).  Don’t smoke – it causes fatty deposits in the coronary arteries – and cut back on salt and cholesterol-raising saturated fats (foods like butter, cream, cheese, cakes and pastries.)  Get active – even 10-minute bursts of brisk walking can have a positive effect on heart health. For more info, visit bhf.org.uk Type 2 diabetes  “Some 67% of men are overweight or obese and that’s a prominent risk factor for Type 2 diabetes. Men tend to store weight around their middle and this affects insulin sensitivity,” explains Emma Elvin, senior clinical adviser for Diabetes UK.  Signs include going to the loo more at night, blurred vision, feeling thirsty and tired. Diabetes can lead to other serious issues.  “If men reduce their weight, eat a balanced diet and become more active it will reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes and can even reverse the condition,” says Emma.  To check your BMI, visit nhs.uk/Tools/Pages/Healthyweightcalculator.aspx  To help calculate your risk, visit riskscore.diabetes.org.uk Depression  “We all have times when our mood is low and usually these feelings pass, but if they start to interfere with your life and don’t fade after a couple of weeks, it could be a sign of depression,” explains Jo Loughran, the director of Time to Change campaign.  Avoidin

Depression Raises Female Heart Risk

01:35
Everyone suffers the blues occasionally. But for some, depression is more than a passing phase. Recent research finds this delicate state of mind is posing a real health risk for women. “Women that had that moderate to severe depression, they were twice as likely to have either a heart attack, an artery block that required a stent, or death from a cardiac event,” says Dr. Lynne Einbinder, who is a cardiologist with Lee Memorial Health System. Classic cardio risk factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity and smoking. Depression and stress were thought to have an influence as well. Now experts have data to back it up. In a large study group, depression doubled the likelihood of a catastrophic event. Hardest hit are women under 55. “This is the age where, you know, in the forties to fifties you have a full time job or you’re working at home and doing a lot of things in the community. You’ve got children; you’ve got a spouse to balance. These stresses may increase your risk of depression,” says Dr. Einbinder. The addition of depression as a heart risk factor is prompting some doctors to dig deeper into their patient’s state of mind. Treating depression can be helpful both in terms of quality of life and hopefully the prevention of heart disease. “One thing that we have to do both as primary care physicians and also a specialty cardiologist is talk to our patients about depression,” says Dr. Einbinder. Soothing the troubled heart may be a powerful and life-saving intervention for a vulnerable population of women. Heart Attack Mind body Connection, Impact of Emotions

04:45
Heart Attack Mind-body connection Emotions http://www.empoweredmind.com/ A cardiac event such as a heart attack is a major traumatic event in one’s life. Heart attack in many cases, results in a range of emotions a person feels. In some case the “cardiac spouse” may experience similar feelings too. All of a sudden a person must faced with their mortality and vulnerabilities, and it can be very scary. The range of emotions may span from anger, anxiety to depression. In some case, it may range from denial (no big deal everything’s fine, it was caught in time) to, not wanting to live. Each person may react differently. However, it is a fairly common experience. Although some people do not want to talk about it for fear of coming across weak. Or for other is it a way of trying to stay strong for their families. This denial is especially true of men. Again when a person experiences these feeling may vary. Some may feel it day or weeks after their heart attack. While other may experience it months later. According to Dr. Arathi Rao, cardiac psychologies that have helped numerous heart patient rapidly recover and live productive lives explain: “After a heart attack a person typically goes through 5 emotional stage. The true physical and emotional healing only occurs when one has dealt with the first four stages and reached stage 5.” She goes on to say: “I have seen heart patients make miraculous transformation and reclaim their lives once they have discovered how to navigate through these five stages.” Interestingly enough, the connection between the heart and emotions has been expressed my humans for centuries. It is only now that biologist and neuroscientist are validating this connection, i.e., Heart Attack Mind-body connection. There exist a strong mind-body connection in heart disease. New findings show that depression & anxiety can be a risk factor for heart disease. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Stress or Depression Stress or Depression may play a role in causing CHD. Stress can trigger your arteries to narrow and can raise your blood pressure and your risk for a heart attack. Getting upset or angry also can trigger a heart attack. Stress also may indirectly raise your risk for CHD if it makes you more likely to smoke or overeat foods high in fat and sugar. People who are depressed are two to three times more likely to develop CHD than people who are not. Depression is twice as common in women as in men. http://www.linkedin.com/in/DrArathiRao/ http://www.facebook.com/mPoweredMind http://www.twitter.com/DrArathiRao https://plus.google.com/+EmpoweredmindNow/posts http://www.yelp.com/biz/empowered-mind-newtown

What Sugar Does to Your Brain & Body: The Truth About Sugar

07:11
Please Subscribe for 3-4x Videos per Week + Live Broadcasts! http://ThomasDeLauer.com What Sugar Does to Your Brain & Body: The Truth About Sugar - Thomas DeLauer Sugar’s Effect on the Body 1. Inflammation, Joint Pain, and Aged Skin High sugar foods have been shown to lead to inflammation in the body, which can increase the susceptibility of individuals to these diseases and can also worsen symptoms for those already suffering from them. Scientific surveys have also found that increased sugar consumption, in particular sugar filled soda, may increase the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis and may worsen symptoms (RA). 1,2 The inflammation caused by sugar not only impacts our health, but also our skins look and feel. When sugars attached to proteins in your bloodstream, advanced glycation end products, or AGEs, are formed. These harmful molecules age your skin through causing damage to the elastin and collagen. This leads to more wrinkles and sagging skin.3 2. Heart Health When you consume simple sugars, the boost of insulin in the bloodstream can cause artery walls to grow faster than normal and lose their elasticity. Over time, this can lead to heart attacks, stroke, and heart disease. Additionally, research suggests that consuming less sugar may help to lower blood pressure, which is a major heart disease risk factor. Studies have found that those who eat a lot of sugar (25% or more of their calories as added sugar) are twice as likely to die of heart disease when compared to those who consume 10% or less of their total calories from sugar.4 Sugar’s Effect on the Brain 1. Addiction Sugar shares many similarities with drugs of abuse. In rat studies sugar has been found to lead to signs of dopamine sensitization and opioid dependence, including cross-sensitization with alcohol and amphetamine, neurochemical and behavioral signs of withdrawal, and alterations in dopamine and my-opioid receptors.6 When you eat sugar, you brain releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter that causes you to feel good. Whole foods, even fruits, do not cause the release of the same quantity of dopamine as processed, sugary foods, such as donuts. As time goes on, your sensitivity to dopamine decreases, causing your brain to need more to feel the same amount of pleasure. This is what causes addiction cravings to sugar. 2. Depression Studies have linked high sugar consumption to depression risk in adults. This leads to the following question: does sugar lead to depression, or does depression influence sugar intake? Case Study: Sugar Impacts and Adverse Effect on Long-Term Psychological Health 7 In a 2017 study published in Scientific Reports, researchers sought to determine if sugar consumption leads to common mental disorder (CMD) and depression or if the reverse is true, that individuals suffering from CMD and depression are more likely to eat sugary foods. Through analysis of repeated measures for 23,245 person-observations from the Whitehall II study, mood was assessed using validated questionnaires and diet through food frequency questionnaires. Researchers found that neither depression not CMD predicted the intake changes found during their analysis where positive associations between sugar consumption and CMD and depression were found. This led the researchers to conclude that dietary sugar intake has an adverse effect on long-term psychological health, including both CMD and depression. So How Much Sugar is too Much? Currently the average adult consumes roughly 22 teaspoons of added sugar per day, which is far more than the American Heart Association recommends: no more than 6 t/day for women and 9 t/day for men.5 Remember that this is added sugar, so not the natural sugars found in fruits, References: 1. This video series has grown out of my desire to help people come to a greater understanding of this terrible illness.

Women and heart attacks: Recognize the risk factors

03:30
Women and heart attacks: Recognize the risk factors By Wendy Cornett When it comes to health care concerns, women and men are not created equal. “We now understand that women are genetically very different from men, and they do need specialized care,” explained Dr. Upamaka S. Rao of the Toledo Clinic. “They do need physicians who understand that women’s health issues are different from men’s, and they cannot treat men and women with the same medical problem equally.” In fact, statistics regarding women and heart attacks are staggering. “The No. 1 cause of death in women is heart disease,” Dr. Rao said. “And studies have shown that women’s survival rate (after a heart attack) is a lot lower than men’s.” Post-menopausal women, in particular, need to be diligent about risk factors and keep their blood pressure, cholesterol and weight at healthy levels, Dr. Rao added. Women in their so-called “golden years” may also experience greater levels of anxiety or depression – more heart attack risk factors – than their male counterparts because they may be juggling a job with children or grandchildren and the care of an elderly parent. “A lot of studies show that women in their 50s, 60s and 70s are probably the most stressed of the entire gender population,” Dr. Rao said. “There is a very high incidence of anxiety disorders and depression in women, and we do know that depression and anxiety are risk factors for heart disease, risk factors for diabetes and risk factors for strokes. It’s important for women to recognize what they’re experiencing and seek help.” Click on video for full interview. Dr. Upamaka S. Compared with men their age, young and middle-aged women tend to have higher mortality and complication rates after a heart attack. However, the gap today is not as bad as it once was, possibly due to recent pushes to increase awareness of heart disease and heart attacks in women. Emory's Dr. Viola Vaccarino explains the results of a recent study. What causes dizziness, fatigue, palpitation in young men? - Dr. Sanjay Gupta

03:37
The symptoms which a young man of about 30 years is varied. He talks about general conditions, fatigue, and dizziness. He talks about cardiovascular manifestations like palpitations or cerebrovascular conditions, like confusion, lack of concentration, lack of memory. If these things are going on in a 30 year old, it can be sign of anxiety. A younger age group is more vulnerable and they can have anxiety disorders which can lead to cold extremities, dizziness, lack of concentration, memory lapses. Until and unless you rule out the condition an examine the patient, we can call it as anxiety disorders. The younger age group can be subjected to social pressures, job pressures, this type of anxiety and depression, nervousness can cause all of these symptoms but the best part is we should look into and rule out other organic problems and give anti-anxiety medicines and counseling these patients. There are all of anti-anxiety medicines. But there is no fool proof method which say that anti-anxiety medicines is the way to deal with these symptoms. So sometimes the dose is titrated and the dose of the anti-anxiety medicines is reduced to see what is the best for the patient, sometimes the anti-anxiety medicines cause these symptom which is the probe, of the patient. It is a matter of time to decide what is good for these patients these anti-anxiety medicines.

Top Health Concerns Faced By Men

06:18
Men who take the time and initiative to be proactive with their wellbeing, can avoid the top 5 dangers to their health or at the very least, catch them at an early stage when they are more treatable. 1. Cardiovascular disease is when plaques of cholesterol that buildup within the arteries block blood flow to the brain and heart. Plaque that becomes unstable by forming a blood clot can block an artery leading to a heart attack or stroke. For men, cardiovascular disease begins earlier than for women with a man’s average age for death from this disease at under 65 years. Men can take steps to prevent this – the earlier in life they start, the better. Begin by getting a cholesterol check at age 25 and every five years from there on, controlling blood pressure, being physically active most days of the week, eating more fruits and veggies and less saturated and trans fats, and never taking up smoking. 2. Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in both men and women. But more men are diagnosed with lung cancer than women according to the American Lung Association. It’s an aggressive disease that begins in the lungs spreading early before it has grown large enough to cause symptoms or show up on an X-ray. When it is discovered, it is often advanced and difficult to cure with less than half of men still alive a year later. Smoking is the main cause of this disease leading to 90 percent of all lung cancers. It is still the leading cancer killer in men – more than enough to fill the Superdome every year. Men who have chosen to smoke need to quit as quitting smoking at any age reduces the risk for lung cancer. There are many ways a man can quit smoking and working with his doctor can help. 3. Prostate cancer Other than skin cancer, this is the most common cancer in men with about 161,360 men who will be diagnosed with it in 2017 and about 26,730 men who will die from it, according to the American Cancer Society. This walnut-sized gland behind the penis secretes fluids important for ejaculation but tends to enlarge and causes problems for men as they age. Even though prostate cancer is generally slow growing and unlikely to spread, it can also be aggressive. If men are not getting annual physicals they will often have no idea if their prostate is functioning properly or not. Screening for prostate cancer requires a digital rectal exam and a blood test for prostate specific antigen (PSA). Regular screening and discussing with their doctor the risks of prostate cancer can keep a man better informed and attuned to the signs and symptoms of prostate problems. 4. Depression and suicide We all can get depressed at times but clinical depression is an emotional disturbance affecting the whole body and overall health. Because men tend to suffer in silence hiding their depressed emotions, they often may not get diagnosed with the condition. Signs of depression in men may include appetite changes or weight loss or gain, sleep disturbances, fatigue or lack of energy, feeling restless, irritable or withdrawn, feeling worthless or hopeless, trouble concentrating or making decisions, and thoughts about hurting or killing themselves. Suicide is the eighth leading cause of death among all men; for younger men it’s higher. Any man displaying these symptoms needs to be referred to a doctor experienced treating individuals with depression to get them started with treatment right away before it’s too late. 5. Diabetes Many men who are initially diagnosed with diabetes are shocked – it’s a disease that begins silently often without symptoms. Diabetes is a condition in which blood sugar levels or glucose remain elevated in the blood and spill over into the urine. This seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. is like a slow poison that can gradually cause complications of heart disease, blindness, stroke, kidney failure, neuropathy, and amputations. Excess weight gain, an unhealthy diet and lack of exercise can be leading contributors to developing diabetes. Men who begin to make important lifestyle changes of moderate weight loss, becoming more physically active and eat a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meat can reduce their chance of diabetes and the complications that go with it.

What Are Vitamin D Deficiency Symptoms?

06:05
For more info: https://draxe.com/vitamin-d-deficiency-symptoms/?utm_campaign=Youtube-Apr-2015&utm_medium=social&utm_source=youtube&utm_term=vitaminddeficiency In this video I’m going to talk about the benefits of vitamin D as well as symptoms of vitamin D deficiency. In certain studies, Americans has been found to be the #1 population in vitamin D deficiency. Some of the main symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are a weakened immune system, candida or bacterial overgrowth, emotional ups and downs, hormone imbalance, trouble putting on muscle or losing weight, weakened bones or teeth, cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. Vitamin D supports having a healthy immune response, digestive health, hormone balance, and more. The biggest causes of vitamin D deficiency are not getting enough sunlight, certain chemicals from plastic bottles (bpa), and toxicity. Try to get outside everyday for about 20-30 minutes of natural sunlight. Certain foods that are sources of vitamin D are wild caught fish, raw fermented milk, mushrooms, and eggs. However, there are small amounts in the food you eat. For a good supplement, I would recommend a high quality vitamin D supplement. You don’t want to take vitamin D2, but you do want to take vitamin D3. For supplementation, take about 2000-5000 IUs a day. However, if you have a severe deficiency, then for 1-2 months, you may take 5000 IUs twice daily. Lastly, you want to take your vitamin D3 with some form of fat like coconut oil or avocado to help absorption in your body. For more on vitamin d deficiency, you can check out this article: http://draxe.com/vitamin-d-deficiency-symptoms/ *This content is strictly the opinion of Dr. Josh Axe, and is for informational and educational purposes only. Kelly Brogan- Depression & Anxiety Tips for Women

54:47
High Intensity Health Radio Episode #131: Kelly Brogan, MD: Dr. Kelly Brogan is an Integrative psychiatrist (trained at MIT and Cornell) who came on the podcast to chat about her new book, A Mind of Your Own: The Truth About Depression and How Women Can Heal Their Bodies to Reclaim Their Lives. ➢ Dr. Brogan's New Book: http://amzn.to/1U26VH9 ➢ Read the Interview Transcript: http://bit.ly/1Rl49Ms ➢ Listen to the Audio in iTunes: http://highintensityhealth.com/itunes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lets Connect ➢ Instagram https://www.instagram.com/metabolic_mike ➢ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/MikeMutzelMS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Key Takeaways from the interview: 01:58 “Before I stopped prescribing, I never once cured a patient” Dr. Brogan was a traditional psychiatric doctor from a traditional family. The goal of traditional psychiatry is to keep you functioning and to suppress symptoms. Many mental illnesses are not valid illnesses or diseases. They are symptoms. Most outpatient psychiatrists do not run basic blood panels on their patients to rule out known reversible causes, like B12 deficiencies. She began recommending fish oil, Rhodiola rosea, and other supplements to her patients on pharmaceuticals. Then she read an expose’ by Robert Whitaker called The Anatomy of an Epidemic, which brought her to a lesser known body of science. She stopped using pharmaceuticals and began to cure patients. Her goal is to not only get her patients off of their prescriptions, but to give them the tools to not need to see her. 05:45 Depression Medication Paradox: Practitioners and the lay person (via direct to consumer advertising) are taught that depression is a discrete disease that is likely heritable and is a result of a chemical imbalance, often a serotonin imbalance. There are antidepressant medications that are serotonin reuptake enhancers as well as other that serotonin reuptake inhibitors, and others that have little impact upon serotonin, but impact norepinephrine and dopamine. Trials show comparable efficacy in non-psychiatric medications like beta blockers or thyroid hormone. 07:51 Do Such Disparate Medications Work? Dr. Brogan says that these medications do not work. The reported efficacy is 30%. There is much unpublished literature. A psychiatry study found that 37 of 38 negative studies used to approve 12 antidepressants were not published because they were negative. When you adjust for active placebo effect, these medications have negligible efficacy. 09:14 Antidepressants: Active Placebo Effect: It is the recruitment of bodily beliefs about your being sick and there being a chemical fix. When you are in a trial, you are told that if you receive the treatment, you may get dry mouth, diarrhea, or headache. The placebo might be a sugar pill. When you start to get the side effects, you tell yourself that you are in the treatment group and you believe that you will get better. A follow up study of people who were successfully treated with Prozac were told that they would be randomized to placebo or continue on the same does that cured them. Both groups became depressed. The power of belief or expectancy is a very important and complex factor. 11:56 Long Term Effects: There is not a single study that suggests that being treated with antidepressants for any psychiatric disorder results in improved long term functioning or improved long term outcomes. According to the WHO, depression is the number one cause of disability, yet we have more prescribing of treatment than ever before. This should be inversely proportional. What if the treatment is inducing disability and a chronic disorder that might have otherwise been a reversible single episode phenomenon? It is time to re-examine the theory that depression has anything to do with brain chemicals. 13:07 The Cytokine Theory of Depression: The primary literature is beginning to support the idea that it could be a body-wide, system-wide phenomenon. It comes down to the mismatch of lifestyle with our over 2.5 million years of what our genes have come to expect. This theory asks what we can do to better align our lifestyle with those of our ancestors so the alarm systems in the body, inflammatory systems, and immunological mechanisms, are not on constant high alert. Depression is a Symptom 15:41 Diet vs Prozac: Prozac will not produce clinical effects, just side effects, for 6 to 8 weeks after treatment starts. Diet will produce positive effects within 30 days.
