Ferrofluid Magician
There are quite a few ferrofluid toys in existence, but Tim found this one especially intriguing since as well as the ferrofluid itself, this toy contains a special white sand. The video shows some of the unusual demonstrations that are possible. See http://www.grand-illusions.com/acatalog/Ferrofluid-Magician-814.html

FeelFlux Original
With it's gravity-defying effect, this is a scientific toy that feels like magic! Drop the ultra-strong magnetic ball inside the copper tube, and experience just how slowly the ball falls. Although the ball is not touching the sides of the copper tube, you can still feel the weight of the magnetic ball within the tube. How does it work? The scientific principle is called Lenz's Law. Basically the movement of the falling magnetic ball creates a changing magnetic field inside the metal wall of the tube; according to Faraday's law of induction, the changing magnetic field induces a voltage inside the wall of the tube called electromotive force. Because the tube is made of metal that is a good conductor, this voltage creates electric currents that flow round the walls of the tube - these are called eddy currents. According to the law of excitation, the flowing eddy currents generate a second magnetic field that can affect the magnetic field of the ball. Lenz's law states that this additional magnetic field is always directed to oppose the motion that has generated it : the downward movement of the ball; and the faster the motion, the stronger the slowing force becomes. For more information about how to purchase this item, see http://www.grand-illusions.com/acatalog/Flux-Original-740.html For more tricks that can be performed with FeelFlux, see https://youtu.be/EZlVfeu_GOE

The Assassin's Teapot
This teapot comes from China, and it is a trick teapot! Inside there are two separate compartments, and depending where you place your fingers - either covering one hole or covering another hole - you can get the teapot to pour out of either internal compartment. Supposedly, back in the day, it was a way to get rid of an enemy, since you could pour out some tea for yourself and drink it quite safely (provided you had covered the correct hole) and you could then pour a drink for your enemy, and they would unknowingly get what was in the second compartment, maybe poison. Here Tim demonstrates pouring a cup of tea, and then adding milk, both from the same teapot. I suppose you could have tea or coffee, or whatever you like really. See http://www.grand-illusions.com/acatalog/Assassin-s-Teapot-770.html

Trick Opening Boxes - Part 1
Tim has quite a number of trick opening boxes in his collection, and here he demonstrates some of the mechanisms on which they are based. First up - boxes with sliding sides and panels. These have been around for a very long time, and sometimes they can just involve one or two moves, before you can open the box, but in other cases there can be 20, 30 or even more moves, before the box finally opens. Then there are boxes which requite you to hold them in a particular place or orientation, and then they can be opened. The next toy needs to be spun around on the table, and the resulting centrifugal force moves the internal metal pins in such as way that the box can now be opened. Then there is a box with a weak magnet inside. You need to tap or knock the box in just the right place, and with the right degree of firmness, and this will cause the magnet to lose its grip on the mechanism, and allow the box to open. Finally we have a box which contains a hidden internal maze, and you need to navigate a ball bearing from one end of the maze to the other, in order to release the drawer.

Three Card Box Illusion
Although you can treat this as a magic trick, it is really an illusion, and the only trickery is happening inside your head! Our version consists of what appears to be three boxes of playing cards. Ask a volunteer to pick up all three decks, and it will feel to them that the weight of the three decks is exactly what they would expect it to be. If you then ask them to just pick up the top box of cards, they will tell you that it is heavier than all three packs put together! In fact, this is not true. It just seems to be true. And it is a very powerful illusion. How does it work? When we pick up any kind of object, we already have some preconceived idea in our head of how much we expect it to weigh. Now these packs of cards are arranged so that the bottom two decks are filled with Styrofoam, and are extremely light. The top pack has a piece of mild steel inside, and weighs as much as three decks of cards. Now when you lift all three decks, you have an idea in your mind how much they should weigh, and that idea pretty much matches what happens when you pick them all up. However when you pick up the top pack, you are expecting it to weigh about a third of the total weight. In fact it is almost exactly the same weight as the three packs, it is just ever so slightly lighter. However because your brain is expecting it to be so much lighter, it appears that the single pack is much heavier than the three packs combined. Even when you know how it works, it still fools you! This illusion is called the Charpentier illusion, and it was discovered in 1891. So it has been fooling people for a long time! The traditional explanation said that because we expect the larger item to be heavier, we simply exert more force to lift it. However work by J. Randall Flanagan and Michael A. Beltzner at Queen's University, Ontario, Canada showed that something quite complicated is happening. They found that when people repeatedly lifted equally heavy large and small boxes, they quickly learned to exert the correct force so that they could lift each box a controlled distance, in other words their sensorimotor system could learn very quickly how heavy each box really was. However their cognitive/perceptual parts of the brain still reported that the smaller box was heavier! So two different parts of the brain basically are thinking different things. How strange is that?? See http://psyc.queensu.ca/~flanagan/papers/FlaBel_NN_00.pdf See http://www.grand-illusions.com/acatalog/Tim-s-Three-Card-Box-Illusion-733.html

Endless Spring (HD reshoot)
You asked for a re-shoot of the Endless Spring... and here it is. This is one of Tim's absolute favourite 'party pieces...' The lid is removed from a large tube, and an assortment of colourful fabric-covered springs starts shooting out from the top of the tube. It seems impossible that there can be so many... and still they keep coming! The original inspiration was a joke toy made by a company in Germany. They made a small box which apparently contained soap - the label said 'Savon de Paris - La Tour Eifel'. However this turned out to be a rather tall story, since when you opened the box, a fabric covered spring leapt out, giving you a big surprise! Tim then decided to take the idea to the limit, and bought lots of big springs, covering them in bright fabric, and loading them into the giant tube. When he takes some of his toys to a party, this is one of the favourite items! The only problem is that people want to see it over and over, so Tim is kept busy popping all the springs back into the tube, before releasing them again to general acclamation! Subsequently Tim was asked to help making a version with all the springs covered in pink fabric. It was used in a science television project, and was supposed to demonstrate the human intestines.

Chinese Magic Mirror
Chinese Magic Mirrors are made of bronze. On the back will be a design in relief - in this case the Chinese Signs of the Zodiac. The front of the mirror is smooth and polished, and works well as a mirror. If you didn't know, you might just think it was a metal mirror. However if you shine a light onto the front surface of the mirror, and project the reflected light onto a blank surface, you will see an image. Normally the image is the same as the design on the back of the mirror, although not always.

Magic Flip Book
There are many designs of flip book available, and Tim has quite a few in his collection. However this particular flip book contains an extra element - the basis of a magic trick. The first page contains three pictures, one is a set of car keys, one is a watch, and the last is a pen. One way of doing the trick is to offer someone the choice of the keys to your luxury car, a gold watch, or an executive pen. They are free to choose, but the only proviso is that if the item has already been taken, then they can't claim it. Well, would you believe it! Whichever item you choose, the person holding the flip book flips the pages, and the exact item you had chosen turns out to be taken! There is only one flip book. Can you see how the trick works?

Rope Trick
Not quite the Indian Rope Trick, but a nice and very simple piece of close-up magic! Thread the rope through the little box. You can stop at any point along the rope. Then you slide the two halves of the box in opposite directions, and lo and behold, you have cut the rope in two. The two cut ends are clearly visible, as you can see in the video. Then, when you are ready, slide the box back together, and - as if by magic - the rope is back in one piece, and can be slid out of the box. Skill level required - none!

The Riddle of the Sands
All these toys are linked by the fact that they involve sand flowing from one place to another. Sometimes this flow can create amazing images, sometimes static images, and sometimes moving ones. In other cases the flowing sand gradually reveals words or a picture. And in at least one case, the flowing sand provides the energy which powers a toy's movement.

Tim's Amazing Yi Bell
This Yi Bell or faith bell was copied from a 2-tone bell discovered in 1978 in the grave of the Chinese marquis Yi from the 5th century BC. It is cast from a newly developed copper-magnesium alloy and possesses a singular physical characteristic resulting from its special shape and the effect of temperature on oscillation damping. At room temperature, the bell only sounds dull and wooden. However, if it is heated for several minutes with an alcohol burner, until it reaches about 100 degrees Centigrade, it produces a beautiful tone. Tim has wanted one of these Yi Bells for a very long time. He finally managed to track down a company that sold them!

Chinese Magic Mirror
Magic Mirrors come from China and Japan. They became popular in Europe in the early part of the 19th century and many distinguished scientist have attempted to explain the phenomenon. Superficially there seem to be two kinds of magic mirror, those which produce images similar to the relief patterns on their backs, thus giving the illusion of being "transparent", and those which produce a totally different image from the relief on the back. This difference may be just a deception. It may also explain why there are so many theories about how they work, and how they are/were made. The front of a Magic Mirror is a polished metal surface, and is indeed an extremely good mirror. No sign of any image or picture. However when you shine a beam of light onto the mirror (sunlight works well) and direct the reflection onto a flat surface, lo and behold an image appears. Our mirrors are modern replicas, and are made in China. This small size of Magic Mirror is 7cm in diameter, and comes in an elegant Chinese presentation box. At the moment we only have small mirrors with zodiac symbols or with the symbols of the Magic Circle. All of our mirrors project the same 'image' as the design on their back. In the video, Tim uses a torch to display the image. This is a normal LED torch, but there are a few important things to say about the torch. It has a single LED, and also we have unscrewed the front of the torch and removed the silver reflector. Thus the light comes from a single point source.

Tim's Three New Spinning Tops
The other year, Tim came across a maker of spinning tops based in mainland Europe. Grand Illusions ordered some tops, but because - as is often the case with our suppliers - the company is just one person, and because he was busy with other projects (building a new house for himself) it has taken over a year for the tops to be available. But we think the wait was worth it! We have a small number of these tops available in the Grand Illusions Toy Shop at the moment. But they may not be available for long.

Grand Illusion on the World's Largest Stage - Michael Grandinetti on NBC News
Illusionist Michael Grandinetti was featured in the summer of 2014 as a headlining performer in Masters of Magic at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno, Nevada. The Grand Theater is home to the world's largest indoor stage, with over an acre in usable space. The stage is so large, it can house a full size airplane! During the show, Michael Grandinetti transformed fire into a 500lb motorcycle, shrunk a girl in size to a basketball, walked through a 7ft tall wall of solid steel, levitated 10ft into the air at the front of the stage, and attempted a death defying escape while suspended 20ft in mid-air! Michael Grandinetti is not your ordinary magician. With performances on national and international television, in stadiums, arenas, casinos, and theaters around the country, with symphony orchestras, for Fortune 500 companies, and even at The White House, Michael has made a name for himself around the world as an extremely talented and innovative illusionist. Over the past 20 years, Michael has strived to make magic contemporary and to give it a wide, mainstream appeal while taking his magic in new and daring directions. He has been featured on NBC’s “The World’s Most Dangerous Magic II”, CW’s “Masters of Illusion”, “Entertainment Tonight”, “SportsCenter”, "New York Today", "FOX & Friends", “The Bold and the Beautiful”, "Crook & Chase", and "The Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon". Possessing a true passion for amazing live audiences, Michael has performed at Heinz Hall with Oscar-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch and the Pittsburgh Symphony, Grand Central Station in New York City, Navy Pier in Chicago, John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, VA, the Four Seasons Resort in Lanai, Hawaii, on the red carpet of ESPN's ESPY Awards in Hollywood, and at The White House Easter Celebration. Last year, Michael was honored to be the first illusionist ever invited to perform in America’s Independence Day Parade in Washington DC. During this national celebration of our country, Michael levitated a girl high above one of the floats as it moved down Constitution Avenue, in front of a live audience of 250,000 people. Michael was also one of the headlining performers in “Masters of Magic”, a large-scale production show which ran nightly for two months at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino, in Reno, Nevada, on what is the world's largest indoor stage Michael's personality and style were introduced to the world when he performed his original creation “The Spike Tower” on the NBC television special “The World’s Most Dangerous Magic II”. While covered with a mixture of gasoline and kerosene and secured by chains, Michael had only sixty seconds to escape before two walls of flaming steel spikes were thrust towards him at over 50mph. Bringing together seven illusionists from around the world, at just 21, Michael was the youngest performer on the show. In the 2014 CW television series “Masters of Illusion”, hosted by Dean Cain (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Hit The Floor), Michael was featured, in five episodes, with his original grand illusions. Also during the show, special guest Ace Young, star of American Idol and Hair on Broadway, assisted Michael onstage for his “Walking Through Steel” illusion. In addition, Michael has created and developed custom presentations for Fortune 500 companies and major corporations including Mazda, Hewlett Packard, Grainger, Ernst & Young, The American Marketing Association, Harley-Davidson, Rite Aid, and Bayer. As a respected Creative Consultant, Michael has taught sleight of hand magic to the actors on the CBS Daytime Drama "The Bold and the Beautiful", consulted on a national commercial featuring magic for the United States Treasury, and provided historical information for “Spellbound”, a biographical book on famed illusionist Doug Henning. His original illusion designs have been featured around the world, including stage productions in Japan, Korea, and Italy. Michael was even called about the possibility of making Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, magically appear – before it was built! Michael Grandinetti is making the ancient art of magic charismatic and contemporary. By blurring the line between illusion and reality in a groundbreaking yet personable way, Michael gives the audience an engaging, entertaining, one of a kind experience they will not forget. Amazing Ways to Balance Coins
Here are some tricks that can be performed using magnetic coins. By this we do not mean coins that are themselves magnets, rather we refer to real coins that can be picked up using a magnet. Normally this means that the coin is made of steel, even though it may have a thin coating of copper, cupro-nickel, or other metal or alloy. In the UK, the 1p and 2p coins are made of steel, and 5p and 10p coins dated 2011 onwards are also magnetic. Many countries have coins which are magnetic, although at the time of writing, none of the coins in the US are magnetic. The magnetic nature of the coins allows all kinds of tricks to be performed. Many of these tricks were devised by the Magic Penny Trust, who have been producing the 'Magic Penny Kit' for many years. For the two demonstrations shown here, we have used the two magnets that come included with the Magic Penny Kit. (At the current time, we do not sell this kit).
