Chinese Magic Mirror
Chinese Magic Mirrors are made of bronze. On the back will be a design in relief - in this case the Chinese Signs of the Zodiac. The front of the mirror is smooth and polished, and works well as a mirror. If you didn't know, you might just think it was a metal mirror. However if you shine a light onto the front surface of the mirror, and project the reflected light onto a blank surface, you will see an image. Normally the image is the same as the design on the back of the mirror, although not always.

Three Card Box Illusion
Although you can treat this as a magic trick, it is really an illusion, and the only trickery is happening inside your head! Our version consists of what appears to be three boxes of playing cards. Ask a volunteer to pick up all three decks, and it will feel to them that the weight of the three decks is exactly what they would expect it to be. If you then ask them to just pick up the top box of cards, they will tell you that it is heavier than all three packs put together! In fact, this is not true. It just seems to be true. And it is a very powerful illusion. How does it work? When we pick up any kind of object, we already have some preconceived idea in our head of how much we expect it to weigh. Now these packs of cards are arranged so that the bottom two decks are filled with Styrofoam, and are extremely light. The top pack has a piece of mild steel inside, and weighs as much as three decks of cards. Now when you lift all three decks, you have an idea in your mind how much they should weigh, and that idea pretty much matches what happens when you pick them all up. However when you pick up the top pack, you are expecting it to weigh about a third of the total weight. In fact it is almost exactly the same weight as the three packs, it is just ever so slightly lighter. However because your brain is expecting it to be so much lighter, it appears that the single pack is much heavier than the three packs combined. Even when you know how it works, it still fools you! This illusion is called the Charpentier illusion, and it was discovered in 1891. So it has been fooling people for a long time! The traditional explanation said that because we expect the larger item to be heavier, we simply exert more force to lift it. However work by J. Randall Flanagan and Michael A. Beltzner at Queen's University, Ontario, Canada showed that something quite complicated is happening. They found that when people repeatedly lifted equally heavy large and small boxes, they quickly learned to exert the correct force so that they could lift each box a controlled distance, in other words their sensorimotor system could learn very quickly how heavy each box really was. However their cognitive/perceptual parts of the brain still reported that the smaller box was heavier! So two different parts of the brain basically are thinking different things. How strange is that?? See http://psyc.queensu.ca/~flanagan/papers/FlaBel_NN_00.pdf See http://www.grand-illusions.com/acatalog/Tim-s-Three-Card-Box-Illusion-733.html

The Riddle of the Sands
All these toys are linked by the fact that they involve sand flowing from one place to another. Sometimes this flow can create amazing images, sometimes static images, and sometimes moving ones. In other cases the flowing sand gradually reveals words or a picture. And in at least one case, the flowing sand provides the energy which powers a toy's movement.

Ferrofluid Magician
There are quite a few ferrofluid toys in existence, but Tim found this one especially intriguing since as well as the ferrofluid itself, this toy contains a special white sand. Tim's Amazing Yi Bell
This Yi Bell or faith bell was copied from a 2-tone bell discovered in 1978 in the grave of the Chinese marquis Yi from the 5th century BC. It is cast from a newly developed copper-magnesium alloy and possesses a singular physical characteristic resulting from its special shape and the effect of temperature on oscillation damping. At room temperature, the bell only sounds dull and wooden. However, if it is heated for several minutes with an alcohol burner, until it reaches about 100 degrees Centigrade, it produces a beautiful tone. Tim has wanted one of these Yi Bells for a very long time. He finally managed to track down a company that sold them!

The Assassin's Teapot
This teapot comes from China, and it is a trick teapot! Inside there are two separate compartments, and depending where you place your fingers - either covering one hole or covering another hole - you can get the teapot to pour out of either internal compartment. Supposedly, back in the day, it was a way to get rid of an enemy, since you could pour out some tea for yourself and drink it quite safely (provided you had covered the correct hole) and you could then pour a drink for your enemy, and they would unknowingly get what was in the second compartment, maybe poison. Here Tim demonstrates pouring a cup of tea, and then adding milk, both from the same teapot. I suppose you could have tea or coffee, or whatever you like really. Magic Flip Book
There are many designs of flip book available, and Tim has quite a few in his collection. However this particular flip book contains an extra element - the basis of a magic trick. The first page contains three pictures, one is a set of car keys, one is a watch, and the last is a pen. One way of doing the trick is to offer someone the choice of the keys to your luxury car, a gold watch, or an executive pen. They are free to choose, but the only proviso is that if the item has already been taken, then they can't claim it. Well, would you believe it! Whichever item you choose, the person holding the flip book flips the pages, and the exact item you had chosen turns out to be taken! There is only one flip book. Can you see how the trick works?

Rope Trick
Not quite the Indian Rope Trick, but a nice and very simple piece of close-up magic! Thread the rope through the little box. You can stop at any point along the rope. Then you slide the two halves of the box in opposite directions, and lo and behold, you have cut the rope in two. The two cut ends are clearly visible, as you can see in the video. Then, when you are ready, slide the box back together, and - as if by magic - the rope is back in one piece, and can be slid out of the box. Skill level required - none!

Endless Spring (HD reshoot)
You asked for a re-shoot of the Endless Spring... and here it is. This is one of Tim's absolute favourite 'party pieces...' The lid is removed from a large tube, and an assortment of colourful fabric-covered springs starts shooting out from the top of the tube. It seems impossible that there can be so many... and still they keep coming! The original inspiration was a joke toy made by a company in Germany. They made a small box which apparently contained soap - the label said 'Savon de Paris - La Tour Eifel'. However this turned out to be a rather tall story, since when you opened the box, a fabric covered spring leapt out, giving you a big surprise! Tim then decided to take the idea to the limit, and bought lots of big springs, covering them in bright fabric, and loading them into the giant tube. When he takes some of his toys to a party, this is one of the favourite items! The only problem is that people want to see it over and over, so Tim is kept busy popping all the springs back into the tube, before releasing them again to general acclamation! Subsequently Tim was asked to help making a version with all the springs covered in pink fabric. It was used in a science television project, and was supposed to demonstrate the human intestines.

Tim Rattles his Rattlebacks
A rattleback (also known as a celt or a wobblestone) is a type of spinning top that will spin in one direction, but when you spin it the other way it will slow down until it stops, wobbling along its length, and will then spin in the opposite direction. Originally seen as mysterious, they are now regarded as an interesting piece of physics. One of the original papers explaining how they work was presented at the Royal Society in London in 1988.

Trick Opening Boxes - Part 1
Tim has quite a number of trick opening boxes in his collection, and here he demonstrates some of the mechanisms on which they are based. First up - boxes with sliding sides and panels. These have been around for a very long time, and sometimes they can just involve one or two moves, before you can open the box, but in other cases there can be 20, 30 or even more moves, before the box finally opens. Then there are boxes which requite you to hold them in a particular place or orientation, and then they can be opened. The next toy needs to be spun around on the table, and the resulting centrifugal force moves the internal metal pins in such as way that the box can now be opened. Then there is a box with a weak magnet inside. You need to tap or knock the box in just the right place, and with the right degree of firmness, and this will cause the magnet to lose its grip on the mechanism, and allow the box to open. Finally we have a box which contains a hidden internal maze, and you need to navigate a ball bearing from one end of the maze to the other, in order to release the drawer.

Up, Up and Away!! Paper Fire Balloons
Up until the 1960s, boxes of indoor fireworks contained a piece of yellow tissue paper that folded up into a tube. You stood this upright on the party table, on a plate or ash tray. You then lit the top of the tube of paper with a match, and everyone held their breath! The flame slowly burnt down the paper tube and just before it reached the base, the tube of tissue paper rose dramatically in the air - still burning - and it then gave a sharp crack like a small explosion as the last of the flames ignited a small paper percussion cap that was glued and concealed inside the base edge of the tube. As the flames went out, the ash would continue to rise, often touching the ceiling before slowly drifting down again, and the show was over. HOW IT WORKS - the burning tube of tissue paper creates a rising column of hot air above it, drawing air from table level. As the paper burns, it gets lighter and lighter, until it ends up being carried up by the rising column of hot air. This indoor firework has been omitted from more recent boxes, probably due to the slight fire hazard - setting light to festive paper chains maybe? However the novelty effect has been continued by the discovery that Amaretti biscuits from Italy are wrapped in a light printed tissue that performs in the same way, although without the little explosion a the end of course. And tea bags, emptied of their tea leaves, also work after a fashion. Normal tissue paper, however light or thin, will not work. Research has revealed that most papers, even fine tissue paper, contain chalk or china clay in order to add opaqueness to the sheet of paper. These substances do not burn, and are still present in the ash. The amount is small but is enough to weight the ash down and prevent the 'fire balloon' from lifting off. Further research has uncovered one or two specialised tissue papers that are free from chalk or clay, being made only of vegetable fibre. Some come from Japan and are used for restoration work and other fine art applications. Since this paper is blank it can be printed or stamped as a joke puzzle, Xmas greeting, spoof 'Chinese Mysterious Flying Paper' and so on. The smallest size that works satisfactorily measures 3 inches by 5 inches, about half the size of an Amaretti paper. DIRECTIONS Fold a small sheet of suitable tissue paper into a long narrow tube. Place it upright on a mat, plate or ash tray. Light the top edge of the paper tube, taking care when you blow out the match to turn aside, so you don't blow the tube over by accident! HOLD YOU BREATH - any air current, however slight, will affect the fragile column of hot air rising above the tissue paper, and may prevent lift off. FOR A DARE - try holding one on your hand! Outstretch the palm of your hand, making sure that the skin is quite dry. Balance the paper tube on your hand and light the top. As the flame gets nearer and nearer, and hotter and hotter, do not flinch! The paper should lift off just before you actually get burnt!
