Johnnie Walker Red Label | No Nonsense Whisky #66
Johnnie Walker is best selling scotch brand on the planet and Johnnie Walker Red Label is the best selling scotch. It's cheap, it's basic, it hasn't got the best reviews but we'd be idiots to ignore it. Reportedly containing over 35 different whiskies including malts and grains from Cardhu, Aberfeldy, Cragganmore, Linkwood, Glen Elgin, Talisker and many more. It's also one of the longest running bottlings, initially releasing in 1909. For me, the nose is a little chemically, with some apples and peat. The pallette isn't much better but there is certainly flavours to pick out. Diageo, the owner of the Johnnie Walker blended Scotch whisky brand have an "Explorer's Club Collection" which is only available at travel retail (duty airport). In the Explorers' Club Collection there is 'The Adventurer'; 'The Spice Road'; 'The Gold Route'; and 'The Royal Route.' 'The Adventurer' is today's review and is a 1 litre bottle I picked up for $29 or $39. I can't remember. Price $29.99 ABV 40% Age Statement None. Nose (undiluted) Rhubarb, rose hips, strawberries, nondescript dark berries, faint smoke and peat. Palate (undiluted) Spicy/sweet entry of strawberries, pickled beets and some peat. Finish (undiluted) Montreal steak spice, ginger, simple burning black pepper, and a tannic cola note. General Impressions This is mix. It is not suitable for sipping neat. Given the low price point, standard ABV and no age statement, I can't really expect much anyway. There is a lot of commonalities in flavor with the standard Johnnie Walker Red Label. The Adventurer is basically Red Label with a bit more spice, pepper and peat. Whenever I sip this neat I get the urge to pour it into a tumbler, toss in a bunch of ice, ginger ale, and Angostura Bitters. This makes a decent cocktail. Would not recommend being enjoyed neat. A woman wearing her wedding dress rides in a white Mercedes limousine (complete with bow) next to a fellow in his tux as the song asks the questions, "When I was just a little girl, I asked my mother, 'What will I be? Will I be pretty? Will I be rich?" The song continues, "Here's what she said to me: 'Whatever will be, will be.'" The woman steps out and walks into the room and down the aisle for her marriage. She reaches the front, where her bride awaits. Then at the reception, in front of the cake, which now has two brides on top, the women kiss. The tagline: "Every revolution starts with a splash of red." The tagline seems to be a twist on a reference to war, here implying the brand name and that two women together are revolutionary. It is an unabashedly positive portrayal, showing no negative connotations or implications for some guy who lost out to another woman. It is also disappointing and significant that the advertiser backed out of airing the commercial. After generations of invisibility, in these commercials guys actually get their guys and gals get their gals. Kisses and affectionate displays are enjoyed by same-sex couples in the imagery, transgendered persons are a non-issue, Gay Pride is celebrated and some commercials even seem to sell the idea of being "gay" more than the product. These ads exceed Commercial Closet's Best Practices. -----
