How to Plan a Beginner Camping Trip | Camping
Watch more How to Camp videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/508072-How-to-Plan-a-Beginner-Camping-Trip-Camping I wrote my book for women and also men who were reluctant campers, people who are born in cities, who never saw anybody camping. Like me. I didn't know anybody who camped as a kid and I just was never exposed to it and the whole idea of it seemed scary and gross and dirty and a chore. And then I fell in love with it. So the big thing I can tell you about planning a beginner trip is to make it manageable and plan it so that you still love camping after the first trip. For a beginner, a great first trip is car camping. It really gets you a little bit initiated to the great outdoors and suddenly you realize how nice it can be to be away from electricity and television and your cellphone and conveniences, and even your bed, but at the same time, you've got your car there, so if you forget something you can always run and get it. You can bring a lot of stuff, so you don't have to stress about packing. You can bring water, you can bring a cooler, so you can have the foods that you like to have. Car camping is a great way to get started as a camper. If you want to try a primitive camping trip, there's a couple of things I think you should think about. I would recommend just about a one- to two-mile hike in and what I mean by that is you park your car, you put on your backpack, and then you hike one to two miles in to where camping is permitted and that's where you set up. And then I wouldn't plan the kind of trip for a beginner where you're traveling. I would say you hike in, you camp, and then you hike back out. From home base, from your camp site, you can plan hikes, but you'll always come back, like the center of a tire, that's your home base and then you can take trips out from there. I think that makes a really nice beginner trip. I think it's just enough to feel that you accomplish something and you feel like you really tried primitive camping because there won't be a way to go to the bathroom, you'll just live off of what's on your back, so you'll have that really exciting feeling of doing that, but you'll also be so close to your car that you could run and get something if you needed to. And you'll have that safety of knowing that the car is not that far away. So a one- to two-mile hike in off of the trail head to your camp site, it gives you the chance to experience living off of just what's off your back. It gives you the chance to experience primitive camping, so there is no bathroom to run to, there is no outhouse with running water, a place to wash your hands. So you'll get to experience all of that, but you'll be close enough to the car that leaving is easy when you're done and you just want to get home. You have a quick little hike out, you're in your car and you're on your way to the conveniences of civilizations, and you also have the safety of knowing that the car is not that far away if you decide you hate it.

How to Pack for a Camping Trip
Watch more Packing Tips videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/400108-How-to-Pack-for-a-Camping-Trip Camping can be a nightmare if you're unprepared. Pack the essentials so you'll be ready for anything when you're in the wild. Step 1: Find out about the environment Find out about the environment you'll be camping in. You should know whether you'll be camping in a sandy area, in rocky terrain, or in an area with heavy vegetation. Pack a water-resistant, easy-to-assemble tent suitable for your location. Step 2: Pack the right sleeping bag Pack a sleeping bag that is appropriate for the weather conditions. If you'll be camping at a high elevation, temperatures will drop quickly at night. Pack a sleeping bag that can keep you warm at temperatures as low as -15 degrees Fahrenheit. Step 3: Find out about possible hazards Find out about possible hazards. Know before you pack if you'll need animal-proof containers for food or other equipment to prepare you for environmental or wildlife hazards. Step 4: Pack a first-aid kit Make sure your first-aid kit contains any medication you might need, as well as sunscreen, gauze, antiseptic wipes, calamine lotion, bandages, disposable gloves, a snake bite kit, alcohol pads, medical tape, insect repellent, and electrolyte tablets. Step 5: Pack emergency supplies Pack a kit with emergency supplies, including a flashlight, extra batteries, bottled water, waterproof matches, high-carbohydrate snacks, a whistle, a thermal reflective blanket, a pocketknife, and a compass. Tip Make sure you know how to use your compass. Step 6: Pack appropriate clothes Bring practical clothes that dry quickly, clothes that layer easily, extra socks and shoes, hiking boots, rain gear, a well-fitting, wide-brimmed hat, and a rain hat. Step 7: Bring water Pack plenty of drinking water. A natural water source may look inviting, but it could be contaminated with parasites that can make you sick. Tip You can get water purification tablets at camping supply stores. Step 8: Bring maps Pack maps of the area or get some from the park ranger's office in case you get lost on a hike. Have fun, be safe, and enjoy the great outdoors. Did You Know? Black bears can run up to 35 miles per hour.

Top 10 Tips for Visiting Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks in the Summer
Top 10 Tips for Visiting Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks in the Summer. We spent a few weeks here in Summer 2016. Tip #1 - Be prepared for Bears: You are almost guaranteed to come across a Brown or Black bear in the park. Their numbers are up to over 1000 and they are very active in the summer. Encounters are frequently not dangerous, but be prepared by carrying bear spray, which you can order here: Bear Spray http://amzn.to/2npE8S4. Making noise may also scare the bears off before you even see them. Also, use Bear Resistant Containers for food: http://amzn.to/2o75Qjp Read up on the bears before you go: http://www.yellowstonepark.com/wildlife/bears/ Tip #2 Check for Wildfires: Wildfires are very common in this are in the summer. While we were there we had a few days where smoke chocked the valleys. Know where they are by checking the alerts tab on the websites, or check inciweb for details on fires in the entire region. http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/ Tip #3 Drink LOTS of water: Both parks are at high elevations above 6,000 feet with many hikes above 10,000 feet. At these elevations and in the dry conditions found in the parks in summer, your body loses water over twice as fast as at sea level. Pack plenty of water and keep hydrated! Camelpaks work well: http://amzn.to/2n9uf8O Nalgenes are also great: http://amzn.to/2npQJEH Lifefactory Waterbottles, Glass, BPA free: http://amzn.to/2n9unFk Tip #4 Avoid the crowds by visiting early in the morning or late in the evening: We went exploring around 6:00 each morning and after 6:00 in the evening. In the mornings the park will start to fill by 9:00 and be busy untill 6:00 in the evening. Tip #5 Consider Camping Outside the Parks: While visiting we stayed in national forest campgrounds on the outskirts of the parks. Not only are the campgrounds crazy busy in the parks they are quite expensive for not having any hookups at most of them. Use the https://www.recreation.gov/ website to find campgrounds. Tip #6 Be respectful of wildlife: Visiting the park you will get up close and personal with lots of big animals. Dont get too close or you will get hurt. Also do not feed the animals, We saw people feeding foxes and squirrels. Doing this gets animals too reliant on humans or makes them dangerous. Help spread the message with these cool stickers: http://amzn.to/2mSLwS9 #7 Be Wary of other drivers in the park: We have never had so many close calls with vehicular accidents as our time in the park. There are so many distractions and so many people, many with RV's and large vehicles. This is a recipe for disaster so driver defensively, and watch out for other drivers. Drive safely and don't cause an accident. #8 Stop at the Visitors' Centers: They are incredibly helpful and will help you have the best experience possible. Utilize their service when you get to the park! #9 Leave your dogs at home: Your dogs are not allowed on any trails or any undeveloped place in the park. Your dog smells like a wolf to many wildlife and screws up natural patterns. Many large animals are also more likely to attack you with a dog. We saw to many people disobeying these rules. Don't be that person. You could also face hefty fines. #10 Be safe, don't push your luck: Think things through and don't go beyond your means. We saw many people doing dangerous things or clearly unprepared. Be smart and stay safe. How to plan a trip/ camping trip- My silver award project
This is my girl scout silver award project i got inspired to do this when my troop took a trip to Washington d.c. in the summer of 2012. my troop leader was really stressed out so i decided that why couldn't the girls help out too with knowledge that they could have over trip planning. my silver award teachers kids how to pack and what they need to pack for certain trips. the pictures are mostly from my trip to d.c. but at the end were pictures that had been taken of a presentation that i did at a daycare center for the older kids. the pictures show how the kids learned how to fold a bandana for when they go camping and how to pack with a little help from others.

Solo Stealth Camping Trip Trouble: Part 2, Fierce Headwinds
Well, I awoke to find a chill wind blowing. It was blowing strong and right in my face. That made pedaling hard. I kept it up, hoping to wear down the wind, but Nature was laughing at my plan to outlast Her. So I adjusted my plan to reach the nearest town and buy some food. I selected a secluded Stealth Camping site about 3 miles from the nearest town, a place where deer had bedded down. Deer know how to stay out of the wind, they know all the secluded spots where they can avoid predators. I found one, dropped my bike trailer, and headed for the nearest town, Clinton Michigan, to buy provisions, (a loaf of bread and a can of Spam). I returned to my site and unloaded my trailer and set up my tent and snugged in, out of the howling wind. It felt good. I had changed my approach based on what Nature thew at me. I felt like I was King of the Road. I get lots of comments about the type of tent I use. You can find this tent here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IBAPH0S/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=dougswebsit08-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B01IBAPH0S&linkId=0668870a8bb7f100bec7175ffbebd48d As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. This is a way to support my channel. I don't recommend stuff that isn't good, and this tent is awesome! The bike trailer is awesome too because it lets me go about 1/3 more distance per day because the load is lower and more balanced. That translates into an easier ride. So you can find this trailer here: https://amzn.to/2S3jyUr

2018 New Years Camping Trip that wasn't
I’ve planned for this trip for over a year now. At least based on the fact that in the summer of 2016 I bucked, split, and stacked a stash of hard wood maple in anticipation I’d be returning to burn it one day. (I know it’s still there I stopped by to check on it the last day of hunting season.) I was to stay for 3 nights over this New Years. I’d go in on Friday and return on Monday New Years Day. Everything was coming together and based on prior experience I had everything packed and I was off. After my arrival and having loaded and tied down my gear on the sled I put on my Permafrost Parka and hood but couldn’t locate my Buff (despite having it on my check list of equipment) but I did locate my backup balaclava. The familiar ¾ mile sled haul across the lake was next and I knew I’d soon be setting up camp near my stash of dry hard wood for the weekend. The three night dinner menu consisted of venison back straps, homemade lasagna, or venison/bacon burgers. Breakfasts would consist of Oscars smoked pork tenderloin, hash browns with green peppers and onions, duck eggs, coffee, and OJ or instead of eggs buckwheat pancakes and maple syrup. I had some chili if I elected to eat lunch but I usually wouldn’t. Extra sharp cheese and crackers for hors d'oeuvres and to drink I had a new, for me, mead called Odin’s Tears by Heritage Meadery or I’d sip on Buckshot a peppered and maple bourbon whiskey gifted to me by my wife. Over the weekend I had plans to extend my ski trail through the hardwood glade with my new skis, buck up some more wood for the wood stash, and drill some ice holes and try some fishing. Mostly however I would be savoring the moments being outdoors in the cold, sitting next to the wood stove gazing out my vinyl window listening to the cracking of trees and lake ice as they freeze up, the wind howling and rattling the tent at night, and listening to an audible book recommend to me by my brother: Astoria by Peter Stark. Alas it’s not going to occur at the lake this New Year… About 1/3 of the way across the lake I had a fleeting thought that there were no snowmobile trails that usually ran up the middle of the lake. A little further along I suddenly ran into a small patch of slush but quickly scurried through and around it. Mind you when you’re hauling a sled and backpack and do the “quickly scurried maneuver” you expend a fair amount of energy and well… I needed to pause for a rest. That pause resulted in my first sled freeze up. I quickly overturned my sled and scarped the slushy mess off and hauled further away from the area finding a slush free area to rest. Having recouped I hauled on and nearing my ½ way mark it was now very apparent to me no snowmobiles have been on the lake at all. Simultaneously my tracks began to quickly fill in with slush so I attempted a 180 degree turn but by the time I passed my sled in the turn the slush locked onto its bottom and my skis. I was stuck... solid. Safe but stuck. I had to remove my skis and walk with them to find a slush free area and remove the now freezing slush on the skis bottoms. I reapplied “Glop Stopper” to the skins and rested. I eventually returned to the sled, turned it on its side, and began scraping the freezing slush off the bottom. It was at the beginning of this second, and move severe, slush event that I had decided I wasn’t going any further and that I would return home. I wouldn’t risk getting bogged down in any more slushy areas, perhaps several, to get to my camping area and stash of wood. These two events were exhausting… and had I gone on and encountered more slush I still would have to set up camp. Overall it was a good day to be out and about in winter. I’ll still enjoy everything I was bringing with me camping I’ll just be enjoying it at home next to my wood stove in the den. Cheers and Happy New Years Everyone!

Wildcat Creek Camping/Fishing Trip
Right before the weekend hit, my crazy friends decide to plan a camping/fishing trip to Wildcat Creek, Georgia. This trip was a "spur the moment" type thing, so there was not much planning involved. I learned a lot of new things on this trip! One of the most important being, never buy inner tubes from Walmart... My favorite part of this trip was playing the 2 new games we thought of (Hammock Frisbee, and Throwing a inner tube on a pole???). I also got to see a wild black bear for the first time! Glad we didn't get mauled to death... Anyways, hope ya'll enjoy!

First Camping Trip - Camping With Kids
Ever since my daughter turned 4, I've been waiting for the right time to take her on our first camping trip! My original plan was to do a short hike to a great site in the Kisatchie Hills Wilderness. We made it 100 feet from the truck before she was done...plan B. There are several semi-developed campgrounds in this area and we ended up at Coyote Camp. I only had gear for backpack camping, so I am looking forward to expanding into car camping. Chairs, ice chests, Coleman stoves, soooo luxurious!! Find more info: http://www.louisianahikes.com
