Here are the sections that you should have in your marketing plan template: 1) Brief explanation and overview of your company 2) Your company's unique value proposition, sometimes referred to as UVP 3) Your company's budget 4) Dates and deadlines 5) Marketing team 6) Competitive analysis and an explanation of how you will out-compete your business competitors 7) Marketing strategies that your business will implement 8) Your target market and your target market size A marketing plan with the above 8 sections would be a well structured document. But your business hardly needs a properly structured and formatted document. What your business needs is the best possible course of action for your business. What would make it a very good plan for your business is if the marketing plan had as good as possible execution strategies of the actual promotional tactics that will be carried out. That is the real measure of quality and worth of this document. My marketing and business plan course have a marketing plan example that I used for my business. What is good about it is that I talk about my own strategies in hindsight after having implemented those strategies. Step 1: Capture their attention Use no more than three double-spaced pages for the Executive Summary. Detail the company profile, product, management team, market trends, key projections, and financing you need. Step 2: Identify the mission Identify the mission and give your company’s history, the proposed legal form the new entity will take, and a sales strategy. Provide competitor research and state your advantage over them. Step 3: Analyze the market Analyze the market further, targeting competitors to reassure the reader that your venture anticipates every stumbling block. Tip Stick to who, what, why, where, when, and how, like a good reporter, to keep the information succinct and pertinent. Step 4: Describe responsibilities Describe the management team’s responsibilities and backgrounds. Outline the organizational structure, board, and ownership. Step 5: Detail operations Detail operations by laying out current and future market strategies, production plans, customer support, and key personnel. After that, I get into the template of the business plan, and explain what each section of this document should contain, how to write it, and how to impress investors or savvy business people. Because after all, what makes a good business plan isn't the outline or the template, but the business strategy and business model that you outline in the document. The tutorial template outline covers the executive summary, writing your product or service description section, creating your marketing plan and how to think about and write the section of the business plan that discusses your revenue streams, projected (pro forma) revenue and earnings, how to write your unit economics section, and how to write the section of the document that talks about your founding executive team, advisors and mentors. You should also create a section explaining whether there are any previous investors in the business. Plus, you should crate an appendix which contains your sensitive financial information that you may want to show to investors, but not random other people. So you can add and remove the appendix from the business plan whenever you want. Lastly, you should create a financials section. The financials are more complex and intimidating than other sections so I cover that in more detail in my course on how to write a business plan. So now you have a free template, an easy outline and you should be reading to start writing, creating and doing some fantastic business planning.
