Among the many benefits of yoga—increased flexibility, stress reduction, improved sleep—is the fact that you don’t need a whole lot of space in order to practice it. Real Simple: How to Create More Storage in Your Bedroom

Ballard Designs asked the editors at Real Simple magazine for ideas on how to make the best use of space in the bedroom. The bedroom is often the last place we focus on when it comes to decorating and organizing, simply because it's the most private room in the home. But we actually spend a lot of time in the bedroom, so it should be a restful sanctuary. See more here: http://www.ballarddesigns.com/RealSimple

How to Make a Mini Braided Headband | How To: Hair | Real Simple

00:51
Don’t have a headband lying around? Get crafty and DIY one with your own hair. It may look intricate, but anyone who knows how to do a three-strand braid can pull it off. And don’t be intimidated if your hair isn’t quite as long. If your strands hit your shoulders, this style will work for you. Whether you’re spending the day running around doing errands or headed to an outdoor concert, this style is easy, quick, and comfortable. Here’s how to pull it off in three simple steps. FOLLOW THESE STEPS: If your hair is naturally straight or fine, add some waves with a curling iron. (This gives locks extra texture and volume.) Grab a small section of hair, about one inch wide, from just behind the top of your ear. Hold the section of hair up towards the ceiling as you braid it. (Braiding hair upwards helps guide it in the right direction, so that it will lay flat against your head when you turn it into a headband.) Secure at the end of the braid with a clear elastic. Repeat on the other side. Wrap each braid across the top of your head, keeping it in front of your loose hair so that it holds the hair back. Secure the braids behind each ear with a bobby pin. If your hair is too short to go all the way across, just pin them to each other wherever they land. How to Make Soft Pretzel Bites | How To: Kitchen | Real Simple

00:59
Who knew the difference between chewy golden pretzels and boiled dough was hiding in your fridge door? We did! Baking soda adds that quintessential tang and golden exterior to plain old pizza dough, meaning you can whip this addictive snack up in no time at all. We like a classic savory topping of coarse salt, but a sprinkle of everything bagel topping would be a welcome addition. For a real treat, bake the boiled pretzels without salt, toss the golden nuggets in melted butter and toss in cinnamon-sugar. Serve with a little maple sweetened yogurt or cream cheese and you’ll never be tempted by those food court pretzels again. RECIPE: Serves 4 INGREDIENTS 10 cups water ½ cup baking soda 1 pound fresh prepared pizza dough, at room temperature 1 large egg, beaten ¾ teaspoon coarse sea salt Yellow mustard DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 450°F. Bring water and baking soda to a boil in a large saucepan over high. Divide dough into 6 equal pieces, and roll each into a 1-inch-thick rope (about 9 inches long); cut into 1½-inch pieces. Boil dough pieces, in batches, until slightly puffy, about 20 seconds. Using a slotted spoon, transfer pieces to a lightly greased baking sheet; brush with egg, and sprinkle with salt. Bake in preheated oven until deep golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes. Serve with mustard. 3 Ways to Wear Side Twists | How To: Hair | Real Simple

00:59
If just hearing the word braid makes you start to sweat, try this easy alternative. While a twist looks as intricate and complicated as its counterpart, it’s much simpler and doesn’t require any extra practice. This style can also be pulled back into a ponytail or done with a side part and only twisted on one side. The simple look keeps hair out of your face and only takes a few minutes, but keeps you looking pulled together all day long. On Set with Real Simple Magazine

01:49
Check out my blog with more behind the scenes photos and the spread from Real SImple. http://www.quinncooperstyle.com/?p=1234 Spring has finally started to appear in New York City this week (better late than never), so it was fitting that my editorial with Real Simple magazine came out because it is all about spring florals. Throughout the day I filmed video footage of what really goes on behind the scenes. You'll see what it takes to put a photo shoot together and how many people there are on set. Florals are all the rage this spring. I've been seeing them all over the blogosphere, from home decor to fashion. Real Simple went above and beyond with the floral theme by inviting painter Deborah Freedman to set to paint backdrops. Each backdrop was painted to match the flowers in each of my outfits. It is rare to have a artist painting a backdrop for each shot, usually it is the same background for each outfit. These little touches are what make a photo shoot that much more special. Brilliant Valentine's Day Cards You Can Make At Home | Holidays | Real Simple

00:57
Make a sweet DIY note for your partner in no time. This Valentine’s day, you can craft handmade and heartfelt sentiments even if you're all thumbs. Besides birthday candles, puzzle pieces, a playing card, and a matchbook, all you need to make these cute missives is a blank folded card, some plain old glue, and a marker. What's not to love? 1. Playing cards Select a King of Hearts (or Queen!) from a deck of cards. Glue it to the center of the blank greeting card and write the phrase “King of my heart” below. 2. Puzzle pieces Find two puzzle pieces that interlock and then glue each individually to a blank note card. Write “We just fit” underneath the pieces in red marker. 3. Matchbook Cut or twist matches from a matchbook off, leaving two in tact. Then, use craft glue to attach the matchbook to the front of the card at the center. Write the phrase “We’re a perfect match” on the top flap. 4. Birthday candles Leftover candles from a birthday party? Put them to use with this sweet hack. Glue candles to a blank card and draw hearts above each wick. Write “You light up my life” underneath the candles in red marker. 5. Scrabble letters Repurpose Scrabble letters by using them as part of a love note. Write “You’re just my” on the top of the card and glue pieces to spell out “type” below. 6 Health Hacks From Connie Britton | Tip of the Day | Real Simple

01:32
The actress formerly known as Rayna James (RIP) and Tami Taylor is known for dishing out great wisdom. So when we got the opportunity to sit down with Connie Britton during Heart Health Month, on behalf of Quaker, we wanted to hear what kind of health advice she’d have to offer. Her answers were unsurprisingly eloquent, approachable, and, of course, charming. The insanely busy Britton, who says she’s a morning person, shared that, yes, oatmeal is often part of her morning routine with her six-year-old son, Eyob. A few of her hacks for making it more delicious, in addition to healthy: adding coconut oil for creaminess or almond milk and maple syrup. Because of her hectic schedule, she confessed that she doesn’t get as much sleep as she should—but focuses on compensating with the things she has a little more control over, such as working out when she can, eating healthfully, and meditating to counteract the negative effects of stress. And of course, no health conversation with Connie Britton would be complete without talking about her insanely healthy looking hair. How often does she actually wash it? “Maybe once or twice a week,” she says. Watch some highlights from the conversation, and some of our favorite tips, above. How to Make Grapefruit Negroni Pops | How To: Kitchen | Real Simple

01:01
The Negroni has experienced somewhat of a resurgence lately. And it’s no wonder: a refreshing combination of herbal gin, Campari and sweet vermouth, the Negroni is a perfect way to start an evening. We occasionally mix ours up with a splash of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice, which both enhances and mellows the bitter Campari notes. Last summer we made slushies out of the same ingredients. This summer we’re freezing it solid and serving the pops as frozen apertifs. Slide a couple of very thin grapefruit slices into the molds and sandwich the pop sticks in between them for extra stability. RECIPE: INGREDIENTS ½ cup sugar 1¼ cups fresh grapefruit juice, plus 10 thin slices grapefruit, halved ¼ cup Campari ¼ cup gin ¼ cup sweet vermouth DIRECTIONS Combine sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring, until sugar dissolves, about 4 minutes. Remove from heat. Add grapefruit juice, Campari, gin, and sweet vermouth and stir to combine. Place 2 half-slices of grapefruit in each of 10 3-ounce ice pop molds and top with grapefruit juice mixture. Insert sticks and freeze until firm, at least 4 hours and up to 1 week. To unmold, dip molds in cold water to soften very slightly and remove pops. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet and keep in the freezer until just before serving. How to Carve a Pineapple | How To: Kitchen | Real Simple

01:00
Carving a pineapple can be an intimidating kitchen task. That spiky skin, the crazy hat—best to avoid it altogether and buy it pre-chopped, right? Wrong. All it takes are a few wiggles of the wrist and you’ll be slicing, dicing, and spearing in no time. Here’s how to do it: FOLLOW THESE STEPS: Start by cutting off the top and bottom of the pineapple to give you a stable base, ever important when wielding sharp objects. Choose a sharp chef’s knife or serrated bread knife to remove the skin. We like ones with a thin blade for their superior flexibility. Follow the gentle curve of the fruit, using a sawing motion to help cut through the tough outer layer. If any of those tiny eyes are staring back at you, come back the trim them off. Better to miss some and do a bit of clean up, then to lose a hunk of the edible fruit. For rings, simply lay the pineapple on its side and slice through the core as thinly or thickly as you like. Remove the core with a small round cookie cutter if you’re going for an old-school pineapple upside-down cake studded with maraschino cherries vibe. For spears, keep the pineapple upright and cut in half lengthwise right through the core. Cut each half in half again so you have four equal quarts. Cut out the core. From there you can slice crosswise into pretty fan shapes, ideal for garnishing fruity daiquiris and cocktails. Or, slice into spears for sautéing in brown butter and flambéing with bourbon (just a suggestion). Or do as we do, and dice into pieces big and small for the most refreshing sweet treat nature ever did offer. How to Make Sunset Daiquiris | How To: Kitchen | Real Simple

00:58
Good news: you don’t need to travel to a tropical island to sip on a frozen layered daiquiri this summer. By creating one base recipe and simply swapping in different fruits, we figured out the formula to the ultimate summer drink. Blending the lightest layer (pineapple) first means you don’t even have to clean out the blender between flavors. Feel free to swap in your favorite liquor for the rum, such as brandy or tequila. Alternatively, omit the rum for a fun booze-free treat. No matter how you enjoy it, we guarantee it will be just the refreshment you need. RECIPE: INGREDIENTS 1 cup frozen pineapple 1½ cups ice, divided 6 tablespoons rum, divided 6 tablespoons agave, divided 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice, divided 1 cup frozen mango 1 cup frozen strawberries Fresh strawberries, for garnishing DIRECTIONS Combine frozen pineapple, ½ cup ice, 2 tablespoons rum, 2 tablespoons agave, and 1 tablespoon lime juice in a blender and process until smooth. Transfer to a small bowl and place in the freezer. Blend frozen mango, ½ cup ice, 2 tablespoons rum, 2 tablespoons agave, and 1 tablespoon lime juice until smooth. Transfer to a small bowl and place in the freezer. Blend frozen strawberries, ½ cup ice, 2 tablespoons rum, 2 tablespoons agave, and 1 tablespoon lime juice until smooth. To build drinks, pour a layer of frozen pineapple mixture into glasses, followed by a frozen strawberry layer and a frozen mango layer. Garnish with fresh strawberries. How to Cuff Jeans | Style Tips | Real Simple

00:47
Fold, twist, and roll your way to tailored jeans. 1. The Statement Cuff Best For: Boyfriend jeans, “mom” jeans, straight leg jeans, wide leg jeans Skill Level: 1 If your jeans are inches too long—or even if you’re just looking for a fresh take on the classic pegged boyfriend look—this will do the trick. Fold the hem straight up about six to eight inches (nearly to your knee), then simply tug down on the fold to settle the leg of your jeans back into place. Use your fingers to make the crease crisp and even. 2. The “Tailored” Undertuck Best For: Skinny jeans Skill Level: 2 Skinny jeans look the most flattering and pulled together when they fit just right, but that’s not an off-the-rack possibility for everyone. Use this simple styling trick to fudge the tailored look and “hem” a too-long pair that bunches around the ankles. Tuck the hem up and under, all the way around your ankle. An inch or two is usually all that’s necessary, but you can adjust as you go to create your own customized, length. Smooth out any lumps or bumps in the denim, and check to make sure the crease is even all the way around your ankle. The tight fit should hold them perfectly in place all day long. 3. The Girlfriend Roll Best For: Boyfriend jeans, straight leg jeans Skill Level: 3 You can’t beat the undeniable comfort of loose, broken-in “boyfriend” style denim, but the baggy fit isn’t always the most figure friendly. Create a more flattering, feminine silhouette by slimming the shape of the leg with this easy technique. To start, pinch a section of the hem together, drawing the jeans fairly tight around your ankle. Holding the pinch together, roll the hem tightly upwards a few times to hold the pinch firmly in place, then roll the rest of the hem up to the same level—the look is meant to be laid-back, so the more imperfect, the better. How to Make Sheet Pan Egg Sandwiches | How To: Kitchen | Real Simple

01:31
We love the idea of breakfast sandwiches for a crowd, but short-order cooks we are not, nor are we interested in becoming. Instead, we figured out a genius way (if we do say so ourselves) to cook two dozen eggs all at once. We whipped them up in a blender so they were nice and evenly emulsified then poured them into a parchment-lined rimmed baking sheet. Fifteen minutes later, we topped them with cheese, cut them into squares, and slapped them on a toasted bun. Assembly is fast and easy work for you and a friend, but if you want to keep this casual, you could put the baking sheet out and let folks assemble their own. RECIPE: Makes 12 INGREDIENTS Nonstick spray 24 large eggs Kosher salt, freshly ground black pepper 12 slices American or Cheddar cheese 12 Kaiser rolls or Brioche Buns, split and toasted Softened butter 2 pounds bacon, cooked until crisp Hot sauce or ketchup, for serving DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 400°F. Lightly coat a large rimmed baking sheet with non-stick spray, line with parchment, and spray again. Place eggs in a blender and process until evenly combined; season with salt and pepper. Pour eggs into prepared baking sheet and carefully transfer to oven. Bake until barely set in the middle, 10 to 12 minutes. Remove eggs from oven and top with cheese. Heat broiler to high and return eggs to oven. Broil until cheese is just melted, about 1 minute. Cut eggs into 12 squares. Lightly butter rolls or buns and build sandwiches with egg squares, bacon, and hot sauce or ketchup. How to Make Slow-Cooker Chicken Tikka Masala | How To: Kitchen | Real Simple

00:56
RECIPE: * Total Time ranges from 4 hours, 10 minutes to 8 hours, 10 minutes INGREDIENTS 1 15-ounce can crushed tomatoes 1 medium onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped 2 tablespoons tomato paste 2 teaspoons garam masala (Indian spice blend) kosher salt and black pepper 1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs (about 8) 1/2 English cucumber, halved and thinly sliced 1/4 cup fresh cilantro leaves 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 cup basmati or some other long-grain white rice 1/2 cup heavy cream DIRECTIONS In a 4- to 6-quart slow cooker, combine the tomatoes, onion, garlic, tomato paste, garam masala, ¾ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon pepper. Place the chicken on top of the vegetables, cover, and cook until the chicken is tender, on low for 7 to 8 hours or on high for 3 to 4 hours (this will shorten total recipe time). In a small bowl, toss the cucumber and cilantro with the lemon juice and ¼ teaspoon each salt and pepper. Cover and refrigerate for up to 8 hours. Twenty minutes before serving, cook the rice according to the package directions. Just before serving, stir the cream into the chicken tikka masala. Serve over the rice with the cucumber relish. How to Do a Fishtail Braid | How To: Hair | Real Simple

01:02
Braids are a simple way to dress up hair fast. They’re also great at hiding dirty roots. But if you’re tired of the usual three strand braid or even the more challenging French braid, you might want to try your hand at a fishtail braid. While it is a little more time consuming, it’s actually easier than both of its better-known counterparts—we promise! While this tutorial shows you how to wear the style in a high ponytail, it also looks great worn low and to the side. FOLLOW THESE STEPS Brush hair into a super high ponytail and secure with a clear elastic. Any hair texture works with this braid so no need to straighten strands beforehand. Divide the ponytail into two even sections. Grab a small piece from the back of one side and cross it over to the inside of the other section. Repeat on the other side and continue all the way down, making sure to keep the hair taut as you go. (This helps give the braid definition.) Finish with a clear elastic. Gently tug on each side of the braid all the way down to add width and texture, which makes the style look more relaxed. If your hair is extra long or heavy, help the braid stand tall by sliding a bobby pin up through the elastic and into the braid so that it sits on top of it. It tastes just like soft-serve, but it’s delightfully dairy-free: all you need is frozen pineapple, a frozen banana, and coconut milk. How to Make Blackberry Wine Pops | How To Kitchen | Real Simple

00:59
We love a cold glass of white or rosé in the warmer months. But why should they have all the summer fun? We like to trot out a bottle of chilled red every once in a while to serve alongside our grilled steaks and chops. Occasionally (OK, rarely) we’re left with a glass or two in the fridge. That’s when we make these pops. Just four ingredients—wine, sugar, water, and berries—come together to make a not-too-sweet pop plenty sophisticated for entertaining but easy enough for lazy Sundays. Choose a light fruit-forward red like Pinot Noir or Gamay and the sweetest berries you can find. RECIPE: Makes 10 INGREDIENTS 12 ounces blackberries 1 cup red wine ⅓ cup sugar Get Ingredients Powered by Chicory Learn More About The Symptoms of Psoriatic Arthritis DIRECTIONS Combine blackberries, wine, ½ cup water, and sugar in a medium pot. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring, until sugar dissolves, about 5 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to fish blackberries out of wine; divide berries among 10 3-ounce ice pop molds and pour wine mixture over top. Insert sticks and freeze until firm, at least 4 hours and up to 1 week. To unmold, dip molds in cold water to soften very slightly and remove pops. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet and keep in the freezer until just before serving. How to Make Southern Sweet Iced Tea | How To: Kitchen | Real Simple

00:29
Few things are more refreshing at a mid-day meal than a tall glass of sweet tea. But too often, what arrives at lunch is an overly bitter glass of brown brew or a pale and watery pour. We like to make our own so we can control the strength and the sweetness. When brewed strong and sweetened, tea can get cloudy, but our friends in Birmingham tipped us off to a secret ingredient that not only cuts the bitterness but also makes clear tea. And it’s already in your pantry (or maybe your fridge): baking soda. Just an eighth of a teaspoon is enough to clarify 8 cups of tea. RECIPE: Serves 4 INGREDIENTS 8 cups water 2 family-size black tea bags (such as Luzianne) ½ cup granulated sugar ⅛ teaspoon baking soda DIRECTIONS Bring water to a boil in a large saucepan over high. Remove from heat; add tea bags, and steep 5 minutes. Remove tea bags; discard. Stir in sugar and baking soda until dissolved. Chill 2 hours. Serve over ice.
