This series 'Students of Product Design' is aimed at anyone interested in the product design process. This first episode looks at innovation, how to innovate and how simply changing the structure of the brief can impact on how innovative you can be. This series won't just talk about stuff, the plan is to share with you as many of the things I have learnt in the last 15 years (or so..) as possible through each stage of the design process to help you become far better designers than I can ever be. I'll be looking at research, sketching, model making, portfolios and a whole load of other things. I often think of youtube as a speed learning tool. Have you ever seen the Matrix films where Neo first learns martial arts by uploading a programme to his head or Trinity learns to fly a helicopter in minutes, that's how I see Youtube, Youtube is our version of the Matrix. So this series which is primarily aimed at students studying industrial design, product design or design engineering in university is designed to do just that, give you a knowledge boost to hopefully make your projects, designs, presentations and portfolio a lot better to improve your chances of getting a position as a designer, or your projects if you want to start your own company, anything related to design. I also hope with the content, that everyone will be able to take something away from it as many of the tips I'll give over the course of this series will be applicable to lots of areas of life. There's just isn't enough out there on product design, compared to say cookery shows it's very under provisioned and so I'm trying to redress the balance. There is a problem out there; 2. People have tried to solve the problem in the past; 3. Somehow the way they tried to resolve the problem has failed; and 4. This is how I corrected the problem better than anyone else. If you read any patent application it starts with a section titled Background. The Background identifies the problem and how other inventors tried to solve the problem. Also identifies what is lacking on how to better solve the problem. The next sections are the Summary and Detailed Description. The summary and the detailed description instructs someone skilled in the art how to make and use the invention. In that description the patent will describe with specificity how to overcome the problems associated with the invention in the past. So when inventing something new and improved the original patent invention can very well be part of the new invention. Remember patents do not give you the right to make something, patents give you the right to stop others from making it. For example, if you were the first person to invent the pencil, and someone else came out with the invention of the eraser, a third person could get a patent if they decided to put a piece of sheet metal at the end of your pencil and attach an erase on the end. Even though that person had a patent for a pencil and eraser, they would not be allowed to make pencil or erasers to put their pencil together because it would an infringement of the existing patents. In this circumstance the inventor of the pencil with the eraser could get cross licensing agreements or simply purchase the pencils and erasers from the patents holders to make the product. Even though all 3 elements existed in this circumstance the new, useful and non-obvious way the product was put together hypothetically allowed the patent to be issued. When you think about it, all new products are made up of existing elements such as pencils and erasers. There’s a finite number of elements in the world even if that number is astronomically large. I equate each element to keys on a piano, there’s only a finite number of keys and while Beethoven’s and the little kid playing chopsticks, both have to use the same number of keys. I'm currently working on the Black Friday 3.0 launch. We're currently in the midst of the pre-pre launch where it's all about planning, planting the seed and kick-starting the buzz in the market. Planning is a huge part of any successful product launch. You should have a clear time-frame for your product launch, knowing exactly when the cart is going to open and when it's going to close, if it's going to close. Plus you should have a marketing plan and advertising budget defined so all you have to do is execute. Start with the launch goals. How much revenue do you want to make? Without a launch goal you won't be able to do great things. It's best to aim for something, even if you end up making less down the road. Then lock in each date for the pre-launch. Hey everyone, I'm Neil Patel, and today, I'm going to share with you, how to make a landing page that converts over 40%. I know what you're thinking, 40% conversion rate, on a landing page, that's insane. Well, that's possible. Sure if you're selling a product for $100, you're not going to get a 40% conversion rate. But let's say you're just starting out and collecting leads like name and email address, you can get over 40%. And even if you're selling products you can boost your conversion rates if you follow these exact tips. Tip #1: Use tools like Instapage and Click Funnels. The cool part about Click Funnels and Instapage and even Lead Pages is they break down the landing pages in their system that convert to the best. And they're not making this up by saying oh this landing page converts better than this other one cause it looks cooler. They're using data; they have so many customers, thousands and thousands if not hundreds of thousands, that they're basing it on their existing customer base and their current conversion rates. So they know all their customers are using this one landing page that's converting better than all the other ones out there, that should tell you, hey you should start with this landing page first. #2: Offer an amazing unique value proposition. Not a weak one like put in your name and email and I'll send you a free pdf, or I'll send you weekly updates. That value proposition is terrible. It has to be amazing. With a lot of my offers, I give free courses. I give free guides that I've spent $30,000 creating. But I'm a crazy person. You don't have to go above and beyond like me, but my stuff converts better than most people. Why? Because I go above and beyond. With your value proposition, it needs to resonate with people; if you're not solving a problem that they're facing at a really deep level, they're not going to opt in or buy from you. If you're just scratching the surface and you're not breaking down why they should opt in or why they should buy your product or service and why it solves this problem they've had forever, they're much less likely to buy from you. So really focus on your copy. Out of everything I've tested when it comes to landing pages, copy and value proposition, are the biggest factors that influence conversion rate. #3: Keep it simple, silly. One of my companies was called Kiss Metrics. Why? Because I found that in marketing, everyone tries to over complicate stuff. There's no reason for it. Why not keep things super simple? For example, if you have 10 form fields, when you only need two, remove the extra stuff that you don't need. You don't want fluffy long landing pages that go on and on because you're going to lose people. #4: Show social proof. There are so many different versions of social proof. They could be testimonials; they could be case studies, it could be results that other people are experiencing, it could even be videos. If you're unsure on the best type of social proof, for your landing page, leave a comment below on what you're thinking, and I'll respond back if I think that's good or if not so good or if you should be doing something else instead. #5: Create a video. Not everyone enjoys reading. Some people love looking at pictures. But a picture isn't going to cause tons more people to convert. You need a video that explains everything they're going to get when they opt-in, or buy your product, or sign up for your service. The video should be short and to the point. Under three minutes, ideally under one minute. It should answer any objections people have before they sign up or buy from you. And it should describe everything in a logical order. Follow these tips; you're going to have an amazing landing page that's going to convert better. If you're collecting emails, you should be over 40%. If you're selling a product, depending on how targeted the traffic is, you could be at numbers like three, four, five, and sometimes upwards at 10% depending on the price point. Make sure you subscribe to this channel, leave a comment, share, and tell all your friends and colleagues about this video. If this sounds like you, then take a note from Reid Hoffman, founder of LinkedIn "If You're Not Embarrassed By The First Version Of Your Product, You’ve Launched Too Late" So pick and date. And launch. Before you’re ready. Bonus Tip: Set things up so that the date can’t be moved. I wrote the launch into an episode of Development that Pays. At that point, I was committed! 2: Remember that there are more moving parts than you think. ---- Your focus will the on the product. That’s only natural. But a product won’t launch itself. You’re going to need plumbing. I had my three videos. I also had an email service capable of sending time-delayed emails. Three videos. Three emails. Simples. But it’s probably not a great idea to send people direct to the video: each should be on its own page... And I’m going to need a form - so that people can sign up... And the form is going to need page to “live on”... And…. I think you get the message :) 3: Launch to a limited audience ---- Although it’s important to launch before you’re ready, you don’t have to be damn fool about it; not everyone has to see your “warts and all” version. So launch… but make it a soft launch. Wikipedia defines a soft launch as “a preview release of a product or service to a limited audience prior to the general public”. In the case of the “Scrum vs Kanban the Mini Course”, I “hid” the announcement in a “regular” Development That Pays episode: only people that watched one particular episode all the way to the 4 and half minute mark got the link. 4 - Be ready to make running repairs ----- Launch day rolls around. You push the Big Green Button, and breath a sigh of relief. But don’t relax too much! To paraphrase Mickey Rouke’s character in Body Heat: “You got fifty ways you're gonna * up. If you think of twenty-five of them, then you're a genius... and you ain't no genius.” Well you may be you are a genius. I am not. A genius would not have…. wasn’t expecting to told that one of my videos had TWO audio tracks. - A genius would not have I wasn’t expecting requests for the second lesson on day one. So expect things to go wrong… and be at the ready to make running repairs. 5 - Remember that it’s an experiment ---- It bares repeating: Remember that it’s an Experiment*. This one cuts two ways: It’s a reminder not to over-egg the pudding. This is a Minimum Viable Product, not a Final Perfect Product. It’s also a reminder to measure.
